Yeah it's annoying for you, but shouldn't you check if it was possible first before getting annoyed? Also, I guess the banks aren't charities, so if it costs them money to move the coin, then I can understand them limiting the quantities.

ive been banking for so many years, i have used HSBC since i was in high school and i always deposited bagged change their, i then joined barclays whilst in my late teens and yet never encountered this problem. i started using santander, i deposited cheques and cash with no probs at all.

All of sudden went to cash some coins in and yet it was mostly in £1, 50ps and 20ps, yet it was declined, thats what really amazed me, how can a bank refuse to take money due to lack of space, yet the branch is huge - its 2 floors, the counters are more than HSBC, its alot bigger than the hsbc i went to and yet they still have less space, its joke!

Get over it. All you need to realise is that they're allowed to do it. There are lots of other better banks out there. Move to one of them.

That's because up until very recently their business banking was completely FREE i.e. no charges for transactions.

Even now the £7.50 a month tariff is much cheaper than other banks.

That's the reason there is no counter service.

Funny you should say this, if I had to pick one bank where I would expect to have this kind of problem it would be Santander. Yet two weeks ago I took in £20 odd in coins and they had no problem with it. I guess it depends on individuals.
Few people are capable of expressing with equanimity opinions which differ from the prejudices of their social environment. Most people are incapable of forming such opinions.

  • My son is making money with a bake sale at school, and wants to open an account with a card , so he chose Santander Junior current account. He already has a savings account with them.

Took his cash and ID, went to local branch, was refused point blank to open the account..."as we did not have an appointment".
I pointed out that their website never mentioned having to make an appointment, Branch Manager was downright rude to me.

    Applied online.
Son got e-mail, asking for 3 forms of ID (he is 14 so most of them he does not have), and asking us to send photocopies to them of the documents.
It is Christmas and I am not at work so have no access to a photocopier, I have a scanner and could e-mail scans.
OR we can give them the ID numbers on the passport etc which is what you do for Govt documents now.
He already has savings account with them, so they needed ID for that

There is no phone number on their website for applications.
the only number I coul call was complaints, and he tried to connect me - cost 10 minutes @5p/ minute.

The only offer I got was that we could take the documents into a branch, they could photocopy them for me and then....
    ...this is priceless......
FAX the copies to Santander Applications Dept.

I asked the guy what date it was and he asked "why" so I said : "is it 1985 again" - photocopies, faxes ???????

I am now looking at every other bank - but in light of comments above about cash bags - all my son's takings are in coins - will look at HSBC or Barclays or someone.
