If this is the worst thing Santander have done to you as a customer you've gotten off lightly. This is a light hearted example of how clueless they are. Good luck!

Go into a local branch of Natwest/Barclays/HSBC/Lloyds and ask. Many of them won't offer foreign currency, either because there's little local demand, or they don't have the facilities to store another dozen or so currencies. They all, including Santander, can all arrange it however.

I love a good Santander bashing thread, but this is getting ridiculous.

well im depositing money in, im not changing the currency or anything. ive been banking with hsbc for about 14 years now and never had this problem before and trust me ive paid in alot of pennys much more than £40 in one time, and even with barclays. first time i had banked change and even then it was refused and.... a bank is a bank if you dont accept money then whats the purpose of a bank?

its not in any foreign currency, it was all in GBP, so still dont understand why their was less space, i can understand an ex building society but this was an old abbey national bank, the sticker of abbey national is still outside on the ATM machine!

If you had been told the deposit could not be accepted before the counting started it would have been reasonable, but if they started counting your money they should have completed the transaction. Register a complaint and tell them they muddled you about.

to be honest, i have heard alot of compaints about santander so im not the only one, but i am shocked to see what they did. i will probably switch to halifax, or natwest but im looking to find some DD for the halifax incentive switch first.

Better check their coin deposit policy first, to avoid the bitter disappointment and particularly the shock if they don't take your coins.

If you can understand an ex-building society, the fact that Abbey National was an ex-building society should finally settle the matter.

well, its still not justfying since its now a bank! carry on santander bashing...lol
  • Yeah it's annoying for you, but shouldn't you check if it was possible first before getting annoyed? Also, I guess the banks aren't charities, so if it costs them money to move the coin, then I can understand them limiting the quantities.
  • Another way of using up your change is to put your weekly shop through one of the self-scan machines in the supermarket, and feed all your coins into that. (Use one of the long self-scan tills with the conveyer belt to avoid the bagging annoyances!)

I always do this, its very entertaining and if you put it all in you get the change not in change if you understand me
