There is a 5 bag limit on change, excluding on childrens account which do not have a limit (within reason).
The reason for this has already been mentioned.
Most Santander branches are ex-building society branches and are equipped as such.
Most have safes which have the same internal storage space as an under the counter fridge. This not only has to hold the notes but also stock items. This is the reason for the limit on change.0 -
Another way of using up your change is to put your weekly shop through one of the self-scan machines in the supermarket, and feed all your coins into that. (Use one of the long self-scan tills with the conveyer belt to avoid the bagging annoyances!)0

You could always get an account with a more traditional bank. From memory, HSBC, Natwest and Barclays all have self-service coin counting machines in many of their larger branches.0

I've had a similar problem in an ex-building society Santander - they don't do any foreign exchange. They did helpfully point me in the direction of the pawn shop down the road, which they said did good rates on Euros!
One of those moments, you look round and think have I accidentally walked into the butchers in mistake? No, it is actually a bank. LOL0 -
Go into a local branch of Natwest/Barclays/HSBC/Lloyds and ask. Many of them won't offer foreign currency, either because there's little local demand, or they don't have the facilities to store another dozen or so currencies. They all, including Santander, can all arrange it however.
I love a good Santander bashing thread, but this is getting ridiculous.0 -
This is pretty normal...I used to work at a big building society and we could only take 5 bags per customer, the reason being that the safe was not big enough to store any more!0

If you had been told the deposit could not be accepted before the counting started it would have been reasonable, but if they started counting your money they should have completed the transaction. Register a complaint and tell them they muddled you about.0
