Santander - funny or stupid bank?

I have a Santander current account and decided to deposit my 2012 year piggy bank loose change. It worked out to be £40 and the amount of coins were bagged according to the money bags.

The cashier weighed all the bags and wrote everything down and then all of sudden said apparently she could not deposit the cash as the particular branch had less room to store change. I was like...you what? your a bank and you will not accept my money because you dont have space, what sort of an excuse is that?

Im not sure whether this was a joke or not, but the cashier sounded very serious. the branch was really dead and i realised why, i cannot believe it, i still cant, but i dont know whether i had some sort of trainee cashier or whether other people have experienced this or not?

Luckily their was a hsbc branch across the road so i managed to bank it there with no questions asked, overall it wasnt a total waste of journey.

Has anyone else experienced this? I dont know whether this is funny or stupid, i mean how can a bank refuse a customer for depositting money, because they dont have space?:(

I can understand it to a degree. Its like everything else, if businesses walk in every day and ask for change then they'll accept it (as they can make a profit), but if they hardly ever do it, then they might only want so much. I don't think companies such as G4S handle loose change, only notes, so it has to be kept on the premises.

All my cash goes into a two bags, I keep the £2/£1/50p/20p for myself and everything else in the other bag. When the bag gets heavy, I take it to the local HSBC and use the self service cash deposit.
  • from this experience, im thinking of switching to someone else. im waiting until halifax finish this switch offer in march and hope they do one with 2 standing order like they did in dec 2012, as currently they only accept 2 active DDs only.

HBOS have done this to me before - saying there is a '3 bag rule'. Depends on the cashier. Its ridculous - money is money. If its because of queues fair enough but provide a deposit machine instead.

Unlikely as it will be ISA time...........if they do bring another switching incentive out later in the year it will likely be the same and to get the £100 you must transfer ALL your direct debits, you are not able to do a partial transfer and get the £100. Easiest option - set up (if you can) two direct debits that you can then cancel once it goes through? E.g. credit card/catalogue min payments or charities.

Came across this as well in Santander. Never ever heard of that in any other bank.

yeah, i can understand the long queues, or if the change is all muddled up, but it was correctly alligned and the branch was completley empty, their were 2 cashiers so i dont see what the problem was....

i managed to find only 1 charity thats willing to do DD, the rest seem to request a standing order...still thinking of some places that i can possibly use...

Many of the ex-building societies have very little storage space, together with the fact that transactions like this do not make them any income.

I was going to mention the problem of storage space. When I worked for Barclays, the branches had large strong rooms, even small branches had this.

When I worked for the Halifax, there were just safes, even in the larger branches.
