I read last night when i googled why is alcohol so addictive that alcohol acts in the same way as a tranquiliser, that really shocked me to the core. I wish I could remember the website it was by the royal society of psychiatrists and was ace, I'll get it and put it on here. No wonder I feel like I'm cracking up I'm in withdrawal my drug of choice has been stopped after roughly 26 years of abuse. My God I hope my kids don't drink but I know that they will.

Thanks, 41, I'm having a look at the site now
I think it's interesting how often we on this forum talk about how 'normal' people (whether it be friends, family or colleagues) can handle alcohol 'normally'... Yet often those people are the first ones to moan when *we* aren't drinking.
When you think about it, who feels awkward when you say you're not drinking? Is it you, who has made an independent decision to be healthier and keep your wits, or is your friend/kin/colleague, who probably has poured a glass out already?...
Sometimes it's easy for us to think that *we* have the problem for wanting to be sober, without seeing the bigger picture.0 -
8 af. Glad to see everyone is doing well! Keep posting! It really helps!
I started my relapse prevention course today. It was very interesting. We did a mixture of group therapy, mindfullness meditation and an 'understanding addiction' workshop. It was very thought prevoking. I am totally knackered now, so will catch up properly tomorrow xxx2022 Comp total (prizes + free spins): £494.81 #20 £12 a day Jan: £382.95/£372 #57 360 1p challenge: £17.70 £10 a day Feb: £571.09/£280 March: £311.96/£3100 -

8 AFDs for me please Shaggy, had an 'ok' night out. Saw my mate's band which was good but the place was full of young whipper snappers who'd had far too many shandys lol
I think I am getting old, they didn't look old enough to drink but maybe they look so young because I am getting older. Felt fine not having a drink, didn't feel the need at all
They didn't have lime and soda, so I had to have a diet coke and now I am bloated. Need to find some other drink choices0 -
Morning :hello:
It was an AF Friday for me :A
ShaggyxWhat do we do when we fall? We get up, dust ourselves off and start walking in the right direction again. Perhaps when we fall, it is easy to forget there are people along the way who help us stand and walk with us as we get back on track.0 -

Thanks 41 AIKI.
I drank as I liked to get drunk. I drank because I am an alcoholic.
Not drinking was not enough for me. It was the sober me that always picked up that first drink. So the problem is centred in my mind.
So for me, I need to change my thinking. No amount of willpower could do that for me. I needed to take actions to change my thinking. For me, good actions leads to good thinking.
Before I changed, I always fancied a drink, so I was either drinking or white knuckling it. That was hard, and with all the will in the world, I couldn't stay away from that first drink.
So change was the key for me. For some reason, I have loads of will power where food and exercise are concerned, but none around alcohol. Why is it like that? I don't know.
Knowing why I am an alcoholic doesn't help me much. Knowing and practising recovery is the thing that makes my insides and outsides great today.
Have a good w/e0
