On the Covenant series, I must have been quite robust at 17-18 as I just can't remember the rape aspects at all- I just remember really enjoying the tolkeinesque world. But I was reading plenty of risque books by then.

When Covenant first arrives in the other world he is overcome by his new virility and rapes Lena. The rest of the entire series has frequent references to his guilt and the effects of his actions (mad daughter Elena, etc). The language is also a little "complex" - using 50 long words when many authors would use 10 (far too much argent puissence!)

Saying that I'm still waiting to read the last book when it comes out this year (The Last Dark).

Terry Brooks has some decent books on a similar theme too (fantasy/adventure)

Thanks for that. You've reminded me- I had the idea the second series was a bit dodgy but had forgotten this. I will leave it on the adult shelf a few more years!

My Daughter and her friends are into John Green books at the moment

    http://www.amazon.co.uk/s/ref=nb_sb_ss_i_0_5?url=search-alias%3Daps&field-keywords=john+green&sprefix=john+%2Caps%2C256

(My DD is 17 so may be best to check if suitable for 14)

My daughter is 17 too and also into John Green right now.

Struck by Lightning by Chris Colfer (Glee's Kurt) is also good. http://www.amazon.co.uk/Struck-Lightning-Carson-Phillips-Journal/dp/0349001359/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1359041877&sr=8-2

I have to say that even after I realised that Kathy Reichs 'Virals' was TF I finished the book and thoroughly enjoyed it! so much so I looked out for the second in the series which is called 'Seizure' - and wasnt disappointed. an excellent read! anyone know if the third and final book is out yet? I cant seem to find any info on this, even on Kathys own site.

I've just thought of another one - The Diary of Anne Frank

  • Into Thin Air by Jon Krakauer, a real account of the 1996 Everest Disaster. It's a great read, quite difficult in parts. Really makes you think about character, life, and death. For a mature well-read 15 year old, I think this would be excellent.

I would also recommend 'Stephen Kings book 'IT', - my son was about 14/15 when he read it and he absolutely loved it!

Not the Twilight books! They're essentially propaganda for abusive relationships, hide them from her till she's old enough to take them with a huge pinch of salt.

Philip Pullman's 'His Dark Materials' trilogy is brilliant.

Where does she go to choose books? Browsing the shelves at the library and picking up what you fancy is a really good way for a teenager to find good books (especially ones that are less popular or older) and establish what her personal taste is.

THE TWILIGHT books are amazing, she will love them, could watch the films there good too.

The Kelley Armstrong 'Otherworld' series - my daughter loved them and so do I.

At that age my faves were Stephen King - Nightmares and Dreamscapes is good - short stories and Dean Koontz supernatural stuff.

I would say take the 15 year old to a book shop and give a budget - they will come away with some great stuff :)
