Skulduggery Pleasant is more for an 11 year old rather than a 15 year old.

Much like the Harry Potter books, it starts young,Valkyrie is 12 I think when they start, but in the latest one she is 16 and the books have gotten progressively bigger and more complex. My 16 boy loves them (as do I).

I have been thinking and at 15 I was reading all sorts. My Dad had so many books it was amazing (but I think I am beating him now to my husband's disgust). Stephen King, James Herbert, Douglas Adams, Terry Pratchett were all at my bed side. My folks said if they had it in the house I could read it (these were the parents that wouldn't let me watch many tv shows, were very strict on bedtimes and I didn't hear any pop music 'til I got my own radio at 14). So I read the 'Exorcist' at 14. On top this I read 'Little Women' and 'Good Wives', 'Tom Brown's School Days' and 'Black Beauty'. I received and read 'The Complete Works of Shakespeare' at 16. Anything I found tough going I put down to re-read later.

I had to go out and buy the last of the Wheel of Time series today after reading this thread, I couldn't wait any longer!

Jackyann mentioned Jane Eyre - that is another favourite of mine.

I've read that several times in my life.

The first time, I was about 12, and was more interested about Jane as a child, and then by the time I was about 15 I was more interested in Mr Rochester!

I think it's good if a young person reads widely from many genres, to become a well read and well rounded individual.

Apart from most that have been suggested I would add: -

Trudi Canavan Magicians Apprentice, Magicians Guild, The Novice & High Lord these are based on a teenage girl growing up.

Raymond E Fiest Magician and any of the follow up books.

16 year old daughter likes the Percy Jackson books (books being much better than the films). Any Anime such as Naruto & Hetalia & prefers the Tiffany Aching Discworld books to others.
Truth always poses doubts & questions. Only lies are 100% believable, because they don't need to justify reality. - Carlos Ruiz Zafon, The Labyrinth of the Spirits

Louise Rennison books - I read them when I was 13/14/15
Would second the Percy Jackson series.

Confessions of a shopaholic / Sophie Kinsella I read the first book when I was 14 but don't remember whether it contained anything inappropriate (Can you keep a secret is also good but again I can't remember!)

At 15 I read a lot of James Paterson/Mary Higgins Clark books (I had baby sitting money and used to spend all my money on books & my mum and dad didn't really restrict my reading material (unlike TV!))
Using my phone to post - apologies in advance for any typos
  • I would reccomend the missing trilogy by Sophie McKenzie too. My 15 year old loved them, as did her elder sister. Not in the same genre as the Hunger names, but a great read ( I read them too!) My other daughter started reading Jodi Piccoult books at about that age too, although the youngest hasn't got into them yet.

They do have a couple of misses but what about the books listed on the Richard & Judy book club?

A new set every quarter (or so)

  • I'm a huge fan of John Connolly's books and downloaded what I thought was one of his thrillers. Turns out to be a hilarious teen book which made me laugh out loud. Very entertaining. The Gates.

    Great stuff folks.

After reading through the lists and looking up the books, and from what my Daughter has hinted at what she does & doesn't like, I've ordered the following for her.

Life of Pi. She wants to see the film, so I thought reading the book first would make watching the film so much more enjoyable.
    Unwind
    The Spooks Apprentice

The last 2 books look very good, and will hopefully lead to her wanting to read more in the series. Once she gets into the books I'll show her this superb thread. 1000 thank you's.

There is a sequel too called the infernals. Also a very dark fairy tale called the book of lost things which is wonderful.

I'm glad you've got unwind op, its so good!
