    There is a sequel too called the infernals. Also a very dark fairy tale called the book of lost things which is wonderful.

    Oh, the book of lost things is an incredibly good book. Thank you for reminding me, I shall try and find it to re read!

    Kathy Reichs has started writing teen fiction - The first one is called 'Virals' which I picked up in a CS and read a few chapters before realising it was TF!

    I was given it as a Christmas Gift a (2011) by someone who knew I enjoyed her other books. Didn't stop me reading it though. (Mind you I read ANYTHING - even sauce bottle labels) :rotfl:

    Sadly some parents allow their children to watch and read and play age inappropriate stuff which some of us feel very strongly against. I know children who watched 15+ films from being very tiny and played computer games of about the same rating from too young as well.. I do wonder if any of these parents actually look at what they are exposing their children to.

    I was asked, by a 7 year old boy last week, whether I had ever watched Phoenix Nights...

    :eek::eek:

    so I lied. NO WAY am I discussing such a programme with such a young child. And I am utterly fed up of hearing children tell me they are allowed to play 18 computer games.

    They are 18 because of their ADULT content.

    And if you are concerned with adult content best not let your children near the bible. The old testament is littered with horrific tales. Like good old fashioned Christian values of rape marriage, stoning children and rules on how far you can go with beating your slaves!
    s'fiction anyway

  • DD showed no interest in them at all until recently when she went through the whole series very quickly. It's a series you can love at any age imho

    Ok, good to know. Makes sense due to the fairly old fashioned language.

    Thanks to whoever recommended Unwind-looks really good- I think I will get it for me!

    On the Covenant series, I must have been quite robust at 17-18 as I just can't remember the rape aspects at all- I just remember really enjoying the tolkeinesque world. But I was reading plenty of risque books by then.

    I also loved Testament of Youth-but didn't get on so well with the later books in that series.
  • Another vote for His Dark Materials and also the Discworld novels.

    The Sally Lockheart books by Philip Pullman are also great.

    My favourites at her age were the Dragonlance Chronicles, and the Song of the Lioness quartet, but I've always been a swords-and-sorcery girl :)
