My daughters school dinners are sparrow portions, and she hasn't even got a big appetite (for one meal) she's a grazer.

    Packed lunch is normally:

Tuna sandwich on seeded bread/ or in a tortilla wrap/ falafel in a pita
Little tub of blueberries, chopped apple, tangerine segments (mix and match)
Fromage frais yoghurt (she prefer the drinky ones - sometimes I get yakult/whatevers on offer)
Biscuit like a cookie, or mr kipling cake slice (as if she goes school dinners its cake + custard)
    Bottle of squash.

Sometimes she has some mini breadsticks/broken up crackers - she hates spread cheese so she has them plain. She has simple tastes, and never eats all thats in her lunch as she has a bit of something from everything which is fine :)

I know how that goes! And many will call me a panderer for saying I'll feed my daughter foods I know she'll eat. They can bite me.

I'll feed my daughter a balanced diet, and I'll get it into her whatever it takes.

Though I'm sure that even if I did not bother with the balanced diet bit, she'd still be a picky beggar. :D

Really interesting website about one youngsters view about school dinners.
I must not fear. Fear is the mind-killer.
Fear is the little-death that brings total obliteration.
I will face my fear. I will permit it to pass over and through me. When it has gone past I will turn the inner eye to see its path.
When the fear has gone there will be nothing. Only I will remain.

My oldest son (yr 7 at high school) says they have to queue for so long to get into the dining hall, there is barely time to eat! So he always requests quite a small lunch.

Today he has tuna and mayo sandwiches on wholemeal bread, an apple and a carton of fruit juice.

He also likes wraps, fruit generally, little cheeses, yoghurts and cereal bars. Occasionally, he will take in a flask of soup and a bread roll instead.

My smaller son goes to a special school where packed dinners are brought in (no facilities for cooked lunches). These lunches are ace and I pinch ideas from them! They have all sorts of things from quiche, pizza slices, popcorn, mini jellies and always plenty of choices of fruit and lots of sandwiches. They went all out yesterday (after 4 days away due to the snow) and supplied little hamburgers that the staff heated up in their microwave. :-)

I regularly see kids walking to school eating crisps/chocolate/doughnuts etc, and also drinking fizzy juice or worse energy drinks. Who in their right mind gives primary school kids chocolate and red bull for breakfast?

We live minutes from a corner shop, and enroute to work you will see kids who look as young as 7-8 with no parents in their school uniform, can of relentless in one hand, king size mars bar in the other. They must give them a couple of quid and tell them to get some 'breakfast' from the corner shop.

I also remember walking home once behind a girl in early teen's in school uniform, who had a multi-pak of crisps in her bag. She ate the entire multi-pak in the 25 minutes I was behind her (This was about 5 o'clock)!

Today DS has tomato soup, a little tub of croutons and a pear. DD has a banana, a red apple, chicken soup, a chocolate biscuit and some croutons. I have forgotten her cheese string and got side tracked because I was going to put in some fig bread for her.
DS asked if he could have a chocolate biscuit and got really upset when I said no because, once again, he left his lunch yesterday. He started saying he hasn't had one all week until I said I put one in on Monday. He then said it fell on the floor so he didn't eat it. I'm going to do that boy! Hopefully, he will actually eat his lunch today. It's not just lunch, it's their mid morning snack too so I would think he'd be starving (which he usually is when he comes home, so you give him a snack and he won't eat his tea). Food is an almost constant battle with him :o.
DD is a pleasure by comparison.
They have had a huge bowl of porridge and a cup of tea for breakfast.

I've only got DS1 in school FT but DS2 in September

At the moment DS1 has a sandwich, ham &/or cheese. Sometimes some cream crackers and cheese instead of sandwiches. Chesestring, Apple and yogurt. And a small fairy cake/2 bourbons.

Im considering getting him a Bento box, but not sure what i could put in it - He's not a fantastic eater. Only fruit he likes is Apples and Strawberry's - and the only Veg sweetcorn.

DS2 on the other hand will eat absoloutley anything!!

  • DD1 today has

Ham and lettuce sandwich on wholemeal
    A satsuma
    A Frube
    Mini pack of Jammy dodgers

And an apple for snack time

DD would eat this exact set up everyday for lunch, even weekends.

We've printed off the half termly school dinner menu and once or twice a week she has a hot dinner depending on the choices.
