I don't see a problem, as long as O2 then discount the price or credit the account by the retail price of the charger you are not getting (in case you do end up needing one and have to buy it separately).

After all, it's a green initiative, not a profit making scheme, isn't it? ;)

I hope you enjoy your 1p off your phone :p

Unfortunately we don't live in Italy or Belgium, the EU Directive you are thinking about wasn't enacted into UK law as the same principles are already legislated under the SoGA.

Google would indeed be your friend, but you don't even need to leave the site, here is Martin Lewis's take on the myth of a "2 year EU warranty"

    blog.moneysavingexpert.com_the-eu-goods-must-last-a-minimum-two-years-rule-is-a-myth/
In the past I’ve even read newspaper articles that get it wrong, so I thought it about time to set something down to correct what’s becoming a common urban myth.

Actually the EU law talks about how long you’ve got to complain, not how long goods should actually last. And while it’s minimum 2 years, in the UK we actually get SIX years to do the same.

Ah, but it wouldn't be a 1p charger, I would expect an OEM charger or the equivalent retail price as a credit, not a cheap Chinese knock off.

Have you seen the official retail price of an OEM charger? It's more likely £10-£15 from the manufacturer.

But also, in fairness to O2, the original O2 announcement was last year and they did say that they would include the charger FOC upon request.

You asked what I was talking about I told you.

The directive is beside the point; the point is that all manufacturers wont use micro usb and the EU will be powerless to enforce it.

Apple definitely wont, how would they make money by overcharging for the addons.

And O2 are using "being green" as a cover for saving themselves costs they wont pass on to their customers.

Apple have complied with the EU memorandum of understanding (not law, or even a directive). The MoU states
As a result, world leading mobile phone producers committed themselves to ensure compatibility of data-enabled mobile phones, expected to be predominant in the market within two years, on the basis of the Micro-USB connector.

The agreement was signed in June 2009 by Apple, Emblaze Mobile, Huawei Technologies, LGE, Motorola, NEC, Nokia, Qualcomm, Research in Motion (RIM), Samsung, SonyEricsson, TCT Mobile (ALCATEL), Texas Instruments and Atmel (IP/09/1049).

In December 2009. the Commission issued a mandate to the European Standardisation Organisations CEN-CENELEC and ETSI requesting they develop European standards for a common charger.

There is nothing in the MoU stating the compatibility has to be inbuilt or free, just a compatibilty with the microUSB charger, the Apple microUSB to lightning adapter is completely in accordance with the EU MoU.

So haven't bothered and took the opportunity to fleece their customers of more money in the form of an over priced adaptor.

Anyway at least most of the others use micro usb.

And also won't change the fact I want charger with my phone. It won't be long before chargers are an optional extra that'll cost you money on top of the phone. I bet apple are rubbing their hands in glee!
