I recommended this to a family member but she is a bit reluctant to use it because she has bridge work done. She is afraid it will discolour the bridge, can anyone give me some advice for her. Many thanks

Bridges, crowns, veneers, dentures, white fillings, fillings etc do NOT whiten.

For anyone looking for advice, there are a few threads on MSE about tooth whitening if you do a search on it. Personally, I have heard good reports about the Crest strips but these seem very expensive and I haven't actually seen them in the shops.

I have to agree with Crest Strips. I bought mine last year from a seller on ebay and trust me they work. The best thing about these strips are they are so easy to use. Its a bit like sticking sellotape on your teeth for 30 mins and its less awkward than those gum shield type teeth whitening systems.
I dont think they are available in the uk yet but you may find sites in the uk selling these. Mine cost around £18 for strips lasting 10 days.

With both the Crest strips and the whitening sets - how long does the effect last? I have seen dentist (eg Boots dentists) doing special offers of around £200 for teeth whitening with claims that the effects last about 18 months - 2 years. Mr Mister - are your teeth still whiter from last year or do you have to keep 'topping them up'?

My teeth was a yellowish colour before trying the strips. After using it for 10 days there was a significant difference and is more white than yellow. You will not get brillant whiteness but there will definitely be some improvement. I havent used it again since I first tried it 6 months ago and my teeth hasnt gone back to my original yellow colour yet. Not sure if it will last a year but will top it up when i notice my teeth going yellow again.
I'm raving about these strips because i've tried most of the other products on the market like whitening tootpastes and brush on types and they were all useless.
Not sure about the £200 Boots whitening. They may use a high level of peroxide which can damage the enamel. So do your research before trying. Crest Strips are Enamel safe.

Anyone a dentist who reads this?

i heard that the "cheap" ones can be bad for your gums and sometimes more destructive to your teeth than actually help.

    Anyone know if that's true?

    I wouldn't touch them with a bargepole!
    How to find a dentist.
    1. Get recommendations from friends/family/neighbours/etc.
    2. Once you have a short-list, VISIT the practices - dont just phone. Go on the pretext of getting a Practice Leaflet.
    3. Assess the helpfulness of the staff and the level of the facilities.
    4. Only book initial appointment when you find a place you are happy with.
