After reading this thread I got some Crest Whitestrip "Classics" (figured the lower level would be a good place to start) and have been using them for 4 days, and there is a noticeable difference already, I'm impressed.

Can't say I'm having any difficulty keeping the bottom strip in place though, they've all been fine so far :)

I agree with you on this one IClaudius, I have heard lots of horror stories about these kits. I recently got my teeth done from this company www.srmlightershades.co.uk for £189, and the technician even came out to my workplace. They used a safer form of whitening which was Chlorine Dioxide which is 100% safe to gums and enamel and the company is CE (conformit europenne - European health and safety product label) approved according to their website.

I got it done in Manchester city centre, but they have technicians nation wide now he told me - it took about 1 hour including free consultation and I went 12 shades lighter!!

I'm afraid they're still illegal, as the people poking about in your mouth are not dentists, and this is against The Dentist's Act of 1984.

I was also rather astonished to see it written on their website that the process will also lighten caps.

This is a completely false claim, as porcelain or ceramic cannot have it's colour changed by anything.

Even if it did - things like coffee, smoking and red wine don't darken crowns, so when your natural teeth start to darken again (3 years at best according to the website - which is much worse than dental practice methods) the crowns won't darken with the teeth - which would look very peculiar.

I'm afraid the website didn't impress me much - there are certainly some false claims on there, and I'm not at all sure about the 'safety' of Chlorine dioxide.
    How to find a dentist.
    1. Get recommendations from friends/family/neighbours/etc.
    2. Once you have a short-list, VISIT the practices - dont just phone. Go on the pretext of getting a Practice Leaflet.
    3. Assess the helpfulness of the staff and the level of the facilities.
    4. Only book initial appointment when you find a place you are happy with.

    Very popular in Goa...cheap too.
Not such a horrible process...they scale and polish first...then open your mouth with plastic bridges to expose the showable teeth, pad your cheeks and gums with cotton wool pads.
Paint on the peroxide solution than bring this UV lamp close to your mouth for 20 mins to accelerate the process. Repeat 3 times and you're done in an hour. Great results.
The only snag is that your teeth are "porous" for 24hours....so you can't eat or drink anything coloured for a day, or your teeth will stain.

How much is this in Goa?

A bit of advice needed please

Now I know an internet forum is not normally the place to receive advice . . . . .but I had a root filling in one of my front teeth several years ago and it is now starting to go dark from within.

The question is:- Would one of these whitening kits make it look worse?

    I thank you

Where is everyone buying them from, Ebay?? If so, which sellers have you used, you all seem to have purchased them at what am sure is a moneysaving price :j

I saw these on ebay, are these any good?

The kits won't penetrate that tooth deeply enough to help, but might lighten the teeth around it a bit, increasing the contrast and making it look worse.

Your dentist should be able to do a proceedure called 'internal bleaching' where he re-opens the access cavity for the root filling and then supplies you with gel that you can put in there overnight over a couple of weeks. That usually works really well.

  • So, has anybody used the premium strips and died yet?

I'm thinking of buying some. Are all the warning just scaremongering?
  • I have been using the Crest strips for a couple of years now (on and off obviously) and also the paste that you paint on your teeth at bedtime, and have had no problems with any of them. My dentist did advise that I could experience some sensitivity, but this could be helped with a sensitive toothpaste, which it has.

Its good to see people finally paying attention to their teeth. For as long as I can remember, we British seem to have a dont care attitude when it comes to looking after their teeth. Ask an American their first impression of a Brit and they straight away will say we have dirty/crooked teeth.

Not a lot of emphasis is put on cleaning your teeth, whether at school or on TV. You see more shampoo commercials than tooth paste commercials.

If our pop stars, actors and even royalty (Prince William/Harry) have yellow teeth, then its not really setting a good example.

People often blame the government because of waiting lists at NHS Dentists but the majority of people would not need a dentist if the had looked after their teeth when they were young. A toothbrush and paste is affordable. Third world countries have better teeth than us and most of them live on £1 a day !

Apologies to anyone who is offended by my rant
