Radiator in downstairs hall only comes on when the pump kicks in. Has it been fitted all wrong?
It doesnt sound right but i'm no plumber, I have 5 rads on a fully pumped vented system, the biggest rad in the bathroom is the nearest to the stove which is the fail safe heat sink.
The stat as described earlier I alter according to o/s temps to give longer running time for the pump so its not switching off so quickly.
If you follow the two 28mm pipes you will see the pump stat, on the flow 28mm the plumber also put a 15mm "loop" back into the return pipe which helps to warm the stove up quicker, I can normally kick the pump in within 15 mins of lighting the stove so it helps no end. From the flow pipe in the pic the pipes go straight into the bedroom where the pump is and off into the bathroom and rest of the house.
I would be tempted to get a plumber in who knows about stove installs to check things out properly and ask them how much it would be to convert to fully pumped system. Wouldnt be a full re pipe job just a matter of linking the two together. You may click thanks if you found my advice useful0 -
Thanks MB, will take a pic of my pipes tomorrow for you. The pump is down on the floor under a fitted shelf about 3ft away from the stove. The looks of it is hard to explain so a pic will be much better. I appreciate all your responses on the matter. Ok, have tried taking photos, but short of ripping out the fitted shelves it is impossible. I shall attempt to describe.
Standing facing the stove
Two pipes come out of the side of the stove on its left. One near the top and one near the bottom.
The top pipe goes straight up to the bedroom above.
The pipe lowest from the stove also goes straight up and this has the stat on it, but a smaller pipe is attached to it and goes down to one end of the pump on a T junction?.
On the other side of the pump a pipe goes straight up into the bedroom above.
I hope you're not as confused as I am

That has to be plumbed in wrong.
The top pipe - the one you say goes straight up should be the flow ( Hottest ) which is where the stat and the pump should be linked into, the bottom pipe ( Coolest ) should be the return ie its bringing back cooler water back to the stove - hot water rises hence the top pipe being the flow as it should be the hottest, easiest way is to feel how hot they both are, but I have to say it does sound as if its been plumbed in wrong going by how you described it.You may click thanks if you found my advice useful0 -
You're right you know, the top pipe is the hottest and the stat is on the return pipe which is attached to the pump. That has to be plumbed in wrong.

What difference would it make the other way around because I still got hot water and radiators?~~~~~~~~~~~~Halifax, taking the Xtra since 1853:rolleyes:~~~~~~~~~~~~0 -
It will kick the pump in a lot quicker for starters, so warm up time should be a lot quickerYou may click thanks if you found my advice useful0

Thanks MB. My stat is removable not fixed. Its on a spring that wraps around the pipe. What if I unclip it and switch it over?It will kick the pump in a lot quicker for starters, so warm up time should be a lot quicker~~~~~~~~~~~~Halifax, taking the Xtra since 1853:rolleyes:~~~~~~~~~~~~0 -
Go for it
you'll also find that the pump will circulate the water for a lot longer as well doing that You may click thanks if you found my advice useful0 -
Isn't the 'stat supposed to be on the return so that it holds the pump off until the stove reaches a useable temp?
Might be worth reading the installation details for your model of stove;) .
Back end protection, saves rotting the boiler.Ask to see CIPHE (Chartered Institute of Plumbing & Heating Engineering)0 -
The stat on my stove and many others that I service have them on the flow - reason being I presume that it doesnt allow the water in the stove to boil ( kettle ) as it cuts in far quickerYou may click thanks if you found my advice useful0
