What do you do if the vehicle at the exit stops moving earlier than you anticipated? Perhaps to let a pedestrian cross, or because another vehicle has cut in?
As others have said, only enter a yellow box when the exit is clear. Scroll down to 174.
Clearly application of that rule differs. A pedestrian/cyclist or any other idiot driver can cut you up at any time and block your exit. There are provisions allowed for this. If the exit was clear when you entered but then a pedestrian jumps in front of you onto the road, you will not get a ticket for stopping. Likewise if a car cuts you up and blocks your exit (e.g. it takes your space after the box) you will not get a ticket the other car will.0 -

you can also be penalised if you do 29mph in a 30mph zone and some idiot driver overtakes you on a residential road.0 -

You've misunderstood. Best you read your post, my response and make sure you understand which vehicle I'm referring to.
There is no flexibility if you enter a box junction because you anticipate the exit will be clear. You should only enter if the exit is clear. If someone then cuts into that space it's a different matter entirely.0 -

I regularly go through the Blackwall Tunnel and those yellow boxes are so faded that at dusk and in wet weather they are invisible. I've also been waiting at box junctions only to have someone nip in front. I can't understand why there aren't warning signs in advance. Like the OP alludes to, the whole route, North and Southbound is a cash cow. I've never seen so many speed cameras in such a short stretch.:cool:0

The highway code seems to have adapted the legislation for some reason, the actual law doesn't state anything about "only entering when exit is clear".
What it does say is....Statutory Instrument 2002 No. 3113
The Traffic Signs Regulations and General Directions 2002
Regulation 29
7. – (1) Except when placed in the circumstances described in paragraph 8, the road markings shown in diagrams 1043 and 1044 shall each convey the prohibition that no person shall cause a vehicle to enter the box junction so that the vehicle has to stop within the box junction due to the presence of stationary vehicles.
The bit in red is slightly different to the commonly held entering when clear belief.Always try to be at least half the person your dog thinks you are!0 -

Now here's the problem londonTiger - you're reading a different rule book to everyone else, that's why you're so confused. Please explain the reasoning behind this one?
Judging by some of the advice they have been giving on these forums I am glad I live 300 miles away from them.:D0
