The exact same thing happened in Indonesia when my son sliced his face open, we was advised to fly to Singapore for treatment which we did.

Took Mrs. Bob the Saver there when she got very ill so Singapore
gets my vote as well for medical treatment. Her (public) hospital room
had a mini-bar, menu with an index a bathroom bigger than my hotel
room plus a fantastic view. She actually asked to say in an extra day.

Great Britain, on a list of best countries in the world in my humble opinion wouldn't be in my top 10 and (I just worked this out) I've been to 25% of the worlds countries.

Medical care in the UK is great because it is free, but is it as excellent as you think? I was in Sri Lanka couple of years back and got seriously ill, I was staying with a family who explained to me that there were no good doctors on the island because all the good doctors could get paid much more else where. I was heading to the Emirates a few days later and was advised to wait.

The point i'm making is that Doctors in the UK earn a good wage, but there are places they could earn significantly more. Is the large populous of African/Pakistani/Indian doctors in this country because we have a shortage? Or because all the good docs have jumped ship?

Our climate is crap with some 280 wet days per year and landscape that rivals nothing. I regularly head up to the Lake District and it is beautiful, but when i'm in Asia, or the USA or even parts of Europe I'm reminded just how snide the Lake district actually is.

The 'Great' in Great Britain is hypocritical, the reality is most people I come across on a daily basis in the UK are self righteous, selfish, arrogant, ignorant, ill mannered small minded individuals who are still sailing off a victory of World War 2 whilst turning their noses up at anything out of the norm, and with an absolute contempt and fear of change.

So I really cannot imagine why you are here?

I think by the time he reads this he won't be, or he'll be just finishing his packing before heading to the airport.

This is what we intend to do, what sort of problems (if any) do you encounter leaving both homes empty for 6 months?
No major problems except with insuring house while away and utility companies being unable to put my account on hold while we're awaysuch that they don't suddenly without warning up my DD even though I've told them I'm away and no one in my property for 6 months and no gas or elec being used.
It's your money. Except if it's the governments.

The 'Great' in Great Britain is hypocritical, the reality is...

    Someone needs a geography lesson...

Great Britain is the name of the island where the countries of England, Wales and Scotland are situated. The name "Britain" was given by the Romans (Britannia) to the entire region, so "Great Britain" simply means the largest land mass in the British Isles, and also distinguishes it from Brittany in France (compare the French Bretagne vs Gran Bretagne). Strictly speaking it is a geographical term only, although it is frequently used to refer to the United Kingdom.

So "Great" in this sense just means "large", like saying "Greater London" and has nothing to do with more subjective forms of greatness.

  • At 32 years old, I don't think I could retire now and settle somewhere for the rest of my life!

I'd love to go back to Melbourne and travel Australia a bit, I went around 12 years ago and loved it.

If I had to choose anywhere to live though, probably Hong Kong, but I'd have to be working or doing something out there! So much to do, so much opportunity and so close to all the beautiful Asian paradises.

Who says you have to settle in the one place for the rest of your life? I'm the same age as you and feel like I have gone into semi-retirement as I travel the world trying to spend very little while earning at the same time.

Noticed a few posters claiming everyone in the world wants to move to the UK so we must be the best place to live.....take a look where they come here from....very very poor countries. Not many moving here from Germany, France, Canada, etc etc
Infact having a quick look at Mercers places to live for best Quality of Life, Germany has 4 cities. Bavaria and Munich is always rated in top 5, usually top 2 in the world. UK is way down the list, infact top place in UK is London and that was rated almost at 50th..
Bavaria has it all for me.....great cities, most fabulous scenery from rolling hills of northern bavaria with stunning towns, or the alpine region of southern Bavaria, and good summers, skiing in winter, great people.
Having worked there for 1 year i am desperate to move there, not just retire.
Having traveled many places in the world, all over USA, Canada, australia and far east I have now found where I will soon live.
