Many thanks for your responses.... At least I can get the theory correct! Investing that sort of money is not on the cards just yet!

I am probably going off topic slightly; but it is it fair to conclude that the cheapest way of holding one Vanguard fund in an S&S ISA is through HL? I plan on using my remaining 13/14 allowance (half in cash ISA) in this fund initially.

I probably will want to add some non-Vanguard funds at some point; wether this be next years allowance or a separate holding; would HL be one of effective methods to a certain point? Or are their other vendors that I should be looking at straight from day one if that's my plan?

    Thanks again

I knew what I meant, shame it didn't look the same written down :)

** 1.6% is quoted on a few websites. Bloomberg has it at 1.64% (the last dividend paid out being 1.9%)

I know you did. It was more about clarification for others :D

I think HL are still the cheapest for a single life strategy fund of fairly low value. That potentially changes if you want additional funds and/or the value increases though (or they change their fee structure post platform review...). Sorry so non committal, but that's the nature of the beast!

I found this pretty useful for comparisons:

are the HL Multi-Manager Funds similar?

The average dividend may be low because the fund launched in November and pays divs in April, hence the first div would have been for part of the year whilst its second div in 2012 would have been a full year. I don't know for sure, just thinking out loud as I'm expecting the div to be around 1.9% on the 80% VLS.

Looks very different to me. The Vanguard Lifestyle funds are a form of passive investment, the HL Multi-Manager Funds are actively managed.

with expected higher charges. For example:

versus ~ 0.3% on the life strategy alternatives. Even with vanguards dilution levy, they look much cheaper. Performance doesn't look to warrant the extra

Just popped another £4K in to the 100%
Put £1K in to the Aberdeen Asia Global smaller companies - hopefully there is still some room for improvement :S

Well done with the 4K into the 100%, also good to see another VLS investor also with the Aberdeen Asian Smaller Company fund, I have that as well as a side fund and so far it has been doing well. Also the Aberdeen Japanese Small Company fund has been interesting for me as well so these are part of my approach.

My recent drip feeds should be added into my various funds and VLS any day now.

    Thanks.

My opinion is that the HL multi-manager funds aren't great and haven't exhibited brilliant performance.

If you wanted an actively managed "portfolio" style fund I would suggest looking at the Jupiter Merlin range.

Active vs passive is not a clear-cut questions. I guess most people in this thread lean towards passive investing, as do I, but some active funds are very successful and the Jupiter Merlin funds have certainly been.

I hold both Vanguard LS funds, and Jupiter Merlin Income Portfolio, in various places for various purposes.

    Hi guys,

Okay, so I opened a S&S ISA with HL and I selected the VL 80 to invest. I got the letter confirming this but when I log into my account I don't see anything related to VL 80? This is my first time opening S&S so I have no idea what I am doing on the website.

Sorry I sound like such a noob, this is so much more complicated than my usual cash ISA!
