Why did you think giving gift vouchers was better than just giving the equivalent in cash? You know cash can be used anywhere, right? And if a store goes bust, cash still has a value.

What make you think cash is rock solid in its value? It's only bits of paper, mere tokens.

HMV. has been in trouble since at least 2011. From before they sold Waterstones in a effort to keep themselves afloat.
Struggling High Street music retailer HMV said sales continued to fall during the past three months.

In an announcement ahead of Friday's annual meeting, HMV said like-for-like retail sales were down 15.1%.

Total sales, which include the impact of 29 store closures, fell 21.8%.

    From Sept 2011

From talking to the staff today. The yall found out this morning in a conference call.

That's fine for people who want to do it but they should not try to suggest to others it is a good thing or better than cash when time and time again people have lost money.

Who has said gift cards are better?
If time and time again people are losing money then perhaps the whole gift card scheme should be stopped??
It's not right that people buy these products in good faith and then get left high and dry and I know it's been suggested that HMV had no idea they would go pop, that's a whole new thread! But maybe the government should do more to secure money that's been hard earned and handed over in good faith.
I wonder how much money was handed over for these cards at christmas?

So if HMV are not accepting returns or offering refunds, 'for any reason', does this mean there is a legal way to avoid the Sale of Goods Act ?

I noticed in Boots this year on the rack of many 3rd party gift card they were selling Pre Paid £25 Mastercards where you take to a till and they take the £25 + £2.95 activation fee ( £27.95) activate the card and then you could give this as a gift

I suspect they get around it because it takes a while to prosecute and by the time you can enforce your rights they've gone!

So you're paying almost £28 for £25? That seems a bit of a con!
