that explains it then, been made redundant after 20 years but asking who wants redundancy first is the logical option as it can seem discriminatory otherwise

if no takers on voluntary redundancy, then you do the consultation period
no need for any consultation if there are less than 20 to be made redundant

i would be questioning this redundancy process of a points system.

if a company needs to make a staff member redundant through restructuring is to first ask the staff at risk

ANY VOLUNTEERS for redundancey, then the next stage is normally last in first out

A points system is standard in redundancy situations nowadays.

Are you a union rep throwback from the 80s?!

i am talking about a consultation between the four staff members it will effect. even if thats a chat in the canteen or over an evening meal

its far better to work out a volunteer to leave and accept redundancy rather than forced redundancy

a worker may be pregnant, have a relative that needs looking after

a redundancy package may be acceptable to some people

i am taking my info from the employment rights act

why would anyone say pick me? Not all companies have 'packages'

I wouldn't have said 'pick me' as I got hardly anything when I left as my company did not have any package only statatory redundancy pay.

They as a company do not have to consult anyone at all in anyway shape or form.

It is not better to volunteer for anything if you want to get JSA afterwards.

What I need to know is whether there is a standard point scoring system as I believe the system my firm wants to use is too skewed against me.

No they can use any scoring system they like and you will be lucky to find out what that is.

some companies have very good redundancy options

    12 weeks pilon
    outstanding holiday pay

that a years wages tax free

dont judge all employers on your own negative experience

Well lucky you but not everyone gets a pay out. I got 4 weeks statory for 5 years work (all but 3 weeks)

Do not judge all redundancies with what you have heard say 20 years ago.

Usually, I'd agree. I myself took voluntary redundancy last year (and got an amazing settlement).

But let's take the OP's case. It's a firm of solicitors. They have to be professional to their clients in every way. They're reducing their legal secretary scheme from say 6 to 5 secretaries, for business reasons. Now, do they want to risk losing somebody they want to keep, thus being forced to keep the person who can't be trusted not to have a go at a client, or do they want to control who goes?
