I feel a bit foolish as I grew this and picked what i thought I was supposed to, the end bit like a baby head of brocolli thinking the bits lower down on the stem grew into other mini heads but now it looks all lanky and about to go to seed. Should I have picked like the whole stem? a couple of plants i might be able to rescue.0 -

No, you did right to cut the large head in the middle (a bit like a small purple cauliflower). It then keeps growing, and yes, the later bits are a bit lanky but it doesn't matter, they still taste good. If left, the shoots will burst into yellow flowers - as long as you get them before they start to do this, you can eat the shoots for ages x0 -
Right, we are having a runner bean growing competition at work. I can't start mine until the end of May when I'm back from holiday but I think that will be ok.All runner bean tips and tricks will be gratefully recieved and I will report back on my results. The competition is to grow the biggest bean!0

You could start now and plant outside next month, if they get rained on and something to grow up, they'll be fine.
Tip: for big bean pods, limit your plant to just a few pods by picking off the extra flowers and take out the growing tip of plant and feed well."We could say the government spends like drunken sailors, but that would be unfair to drunken sailors, because the sailors are spending their own money."

Thanksexcellent tips. For some reason I was thinking for big pods I would need big plants but I shall try the tips you have suggested. We are only getting 3 seeds each so I hope they all germinate!

Poundstretcher have some decent value larger sized tubs & pots for those MSE inclined gardeners out there. Went there yesterday - evening well spent (as well as £20!).
A busy weekend ahead - the 2nd round of planting will commence...It's getting harder & harder to keep the government in the manner to which they have become accustomed.0 -
Thanks

Thanks for the welcome to the thread!
We managed to dig out the humongous rocks lurking under the soil, I think we may have discovered the next hadrian's wall!! :rotfl: Talk about choosing the worst spot possible!!
Aah well, plenty of exercise! The spot gets sun, when it shines... Not a lot of that so far in Wales! Hoping for some warmer weather this weekend :j
Managed to plant a few rows of onions today, although I was disappointed to find out you only get one onion from each set :rotfl:
Oh dear!! I think I have a lot to learn... I'm just hoping the many many seeds I planted on my windowsill actually decide to sprout soon - slightly worried I might have already killed them - not too green fingered I have found out with various plant disasters...:oJuly Grocery Challenge - £0/£140
