Hi!
Just found this thread and it's perfect as I've just moved into my first house with a garden and as the sun was shining yesterday - Oh and I decided to dig ourselves a veg patch! Not expecting to grow much but just wanted a new hobby to do together and growing plants seemed like a good idea at the time!
We're trying quite a few things this year just to get to grips with what we can grow well (if anything!).
Planted quite a few seeds today and they are all now sat on the windowsill - hoping that I will get something growing!July Grocery Challenge - £0/£140

Spent Saturday sitting in my dads large garden, his patio is bigger than my entire garden:(
Parsnips...good news the chicken wire keeps the cats off,
bad news..... ants have moved in  Is this a problem John?
They usually move in the compost heap but this year seem to have picked 1/3rd of my parsnip patch.
Got the edging down along part of the boarders, but realised no point putting it where the spuds are till they're dug up or I'll ruin the edging. It's only flimsy stuff from pound store as I only want it so I can string between it and the fence to keep the cats off. I need more too so must get that this week as it's cheap and easy to put in a trench and holds the string well.
Also put some grass seed down on the bare lawn patches now it's started to dry out.
Toing and froing has started with toms and courgettes and they seem happy in the sun now.
I've repotted the water melon seeds deep. No idea if you can or if they'll rot but they topped out at 8" with seed leaves and 1st leaves just coming through, flopping all over the place and they're on the sunniest south facing window. If they make it, that's fine but think I will ignore the packet instructions and direct sow a few mid May.
45 of 64 spuds now planted the rest going in my sons garden this week, peas have vanished again, so sowed some in the root trainers along with runners and more french beans.
Looking forward to Wednesday, It may hit 20c here (before the weekend chill ) and after tweaking a few things I have the whole day free to spend gardening :j0 -

Welcome WG. And congratulations if you managed to read the whole thread.
New house, new garden. What could be better? You've still got plenty of time to grow yourselves some dinner this year. How much space have you got? How much sun do you get? What are you planning on growing? If you lend someone a tenner and never see them again, it was probably worth it.0 -

Welcome to a very addictive hobby, once you start you wont be able to stop :rotfl:
Potatoes are very good for clearing the soil, and runner beans are very easy to grow.
Hope you have lots of fun

And now I have the joy of having my foster granddaughter becoming my real granddaughter. Can't ask for anything better
UPDATE,
As of today 180919. my granddaughter is now my official granddaughter, adoption finally granted0 -
I have asparagus.
And purple sprouting broccoli. Well worth the wait, as it happens.
IIRC I grew these in a flower bucket until the spuds came out and I had room for them. I'll do the same again this year, plus some sprouts too. At a time of year when the only thing I've got ready is rhubarb, it's most welcome. If you lend someone a tenner and never see them again, it was probably worth it.0 -

And 4 weeks later it's up to 20/22c here in London today. No wonder the british talk about the weather.0 -
LV and MBE how are the aubergines coming along?0

I have just started sorting out the garden and realised that two of my small raised beds now only get partial sun. They are west facing but my neighbour's trees have grown since last summer so they are now quite shady.
Any suggestions of what veg to grow? They are roughly 1 metre square. (I have been very lazy this year and have not sown any seeds so will probably buy the plants.)0 -
