Any E Europeans or anyone who comes to the UK and earns a decent, honest living and makes a contribution is more welcome than the lazy, skiving, scrounging British scumbags who have chosen a life on benefits rather than pulling their weight.

and what about the E European lazy, skiving, scrounging scumbags who choose a life on benefits rather than pulling their own weight?

I have a relative who has just had a room re plastered by a Bulgarian. It appears to be a better job than a previous attempt on a similar room by a UK "tradesman".
What would you say is a sensible day rate for such a tradesman?

As I said previously there are British builders who do poor work and charge a high price but I'm yet to see any decent work carried out by Eastern European builders. Now your average German builder will work to a decent standard as do the majority of British builders.

Sensible day rate is dependant on area.Remember a self employed tradesman should have Public Liability insurance and many don't.Decent plasterers around here currently charge about £120-140 a day but most will quote for the work rather than day rate.I would imagine other areas they would charge anything from £80-170 a day.

Plastering in general is one of the few trades that can be learnt pretty quickly but there are plasterers and "spreads".A plasterer will be able to run cornices, plaster mouldings etc but a "spread" will just do walls and ceilings ,so basic work.

We often see programmes such as "Builders from hell" etc which concentrate on bad builders but the vast majority are decent hardworking tradesmen who provide good service. If we had programmes on the good builders no one would bother watching it.

We British seem to have little pride in our Construction industry and yet we are amonst the best in the world. The Germans are very good but we are not that far behind.Just look at the amazing work carried out to Windsor Castle after the fire , we still have world class craftsmen and women.

Lastly I do accept there are major issues with training in the last 10-15yrs.Successive Governments have dulled down apprenticeships and NVQ,s.

  • How many will be coming?

    Where will they go?

Pickles - the Yorkshire politician turned Essex MP was asked these questions on the box this morning - his reply was in effect "I am no going to dare to tell you".

A bit like the government watchdogs who refuse to name rogue firms, when they belatedly take action against them.

People want shock TV, they love seeing a house crumbling down halfway through building work and the builders gone AWOL.

People won't remember Tommy Walsh for building they will remember him for "Ground Force" with Charlie Dimmock and Alan.

I did watch the series "Tommy Walshes Eco house " which was ok but he made a loss when he sold it.

The benefits claimant rate for immigrants is significantly lower than the benefits claimant rate of the native population.

The "lazy, skiving, scrounging scumbags who choose a life on benefits" are predominantly native born British.

Read what I said...you quotations were selective.

Of course they were selective. That's the point of selective quoting....to direct the person to the very text you are talking about. Hamish was asking me for evidence....so again, what do you want me to do?

Take it you just didn't like it. Hamish still hasn't bothered debunking it either.

It's a bizzare situation to have someone asking you for evidence of certain stuff, only to find out when you give it, you are accused of being selective.

Down here in London the Albanians seemed to be busy trying to organise brothels and the Romanians seemed to have linked up with Fagin and the begging circuit.

That's socialism for you again. It's ridiculous that any foreign national could come to the UK and claim benefits, unless after a long period of residence and tax-paying and NI-paying employment.
