USA Warns Cameron not to leave EU

US publicly voices concerns over Britain leaving EU

America has publicly voiced its concern about the consequences of Britain leaving the European Union, stating that London's "voice" within the EU is "critical to the United States".

Philip Gordon, the US assistant secretary responsible for European affairs, said that Britain's membership of the EU was "in the American interest".

He stressed the importance that Washington attaches to Britain's current position as a leading member. "Britain has been such a special partner of the United States – that shares our values, shares our interests, has significant resources to bring to the table. More than most others, its voice within the European Union is essential and critical to the United States," said Mr Gordon.

Mr Gordon said that America was increasingly dealing with the EU as a whole, rather than any individual member. "We have a growing relationship with the European Union as an institution which has a growing voice in the world – and we want to see a strong British voice in that European Union. That is in the American interest,"

They can toddle off and do one.

What concern is it of theirs, other than protecting their own, which is admitted in the second paragraph.

And two threads Hamish to highlight the news stories you are obvious trawling the web for? Trying to prove a point by any chance?

For rhis and the other post from Britains Business Leaders.

It is only for their self interest very little to do with whether it is right or wrong for the country.

But as usual for this country, government will just bend over and take, it if the US tell us to.

Perhaps the USA would like to pay our annual net contribution for us then.

Commentator on newsnight (from the FT I think) has said the US has a very large interest in the UK being hamstrung by EU regulation, especially so when it comes to the finance industry, as being free from that regulation would provide real competition for the US.

A commentator from the US suggests that the US is fearful that if the UK upsets the EU and leaves, it will rock the US recovery, but he understands this should be up to the British people. There is also the business worry being bought up here. If the UK leaves the EU, US companies will have to pay the UK more tax to continue trading here....obviously, large US commerce is fearful of this, hence the US warning us not to leave.

Love how Hamish appears to believe the US is concerned about us.

Promising (& sticking to that promise) a straightforward in/out referendum is probably the Tories best chance of winning the next election IMO. Funny how every says desparate times call for desparate measures & yet as soon as you talk about leaving the EU there seems to be some default reaction that somehow it cannot be done. It could & should be done. Lets trade with the rest of the world & flourish, not tie ourselves to the EU & decline along with them. Just the feel-good factor of being free of Brussels endless red-tape nonsense & "human rights" cop-out for criminals would make it worthwhile.

Totally right ...what I've been saying all along. Anybody with an understanding of international affairs would say the same. Leon Brittan, (Tory Grandee) was saying exactly the same thing yesterday. He said in reference to any re-negotiation... 'what would we offer in return'?
I shudder at the thought of putting our international future in the hands of UKIP types. It would be highly damaging and we would be a laughing stock!

The left still clings onto the dream of perpetual socialism withing a federal Europe.

The CBI says the UK needs to keep its place within the European Union to push for freer trade for its businesses.
