We are in the digital age! I have sympathy for the retailers but NOT the greedy landlords & town halls who have creamed people too long with sky high rents and business rates.

    Long live the WEB!
  • I am surprised Jessops lasted this long, actually. Our local branch has always been very poor indeed on the customer service front- on several occasions I went there, over a period of a few years, happy to buy camera /video equipment from them and they were pretty disinterested and happy to fob me off with excuses etc. if their customer service and prices had been consistent across the company, I am sure they would not be in quite the same pickle now, they were really not a lot better than Comet, which has to be the worst electrical retailer ever. The days of rubbish customer service and couldn't care less attitudes in High Street shops are going to have to end if they want to survive. Its a shame for the good and knowledgeable staff, though, just a pity we never had any of them here! I also went into their Guernsey shop when over there on business and the attitude was so dismissive I went round the corner to the local independent photographic retailer and bought a new Panasonic Lumix 4 thirds system there instead due to the lack of interest at Jessops, so it wasn't just in my home town that the service was dire.

It's okay saying Long live the web, but what happens when a couple of online suppliers dominate the marketplace?

They will lock out the small fry and dictate prices.

Real choice is about being able to buy online, or buy on the high street. I would have thought cameras offer a trade-in value, especially the SLR end of the market?

Hopefully, some of Jessops stores will survive, those outlets in prime locations with good footfall and an affluent customer base.

I also bought from Jessops before Xmas, and have no cause for complaint.

I think it is important to note that people actually seem to like shopping. Town always seems packed and this will ensure there is something resembling a physical highstreet.

I agree the Jessops in my local town is not very good and I went to another camera shop LCE and got very good service.

Except with procamerashop you are probably buying a grey import from an Hong Kong based company

    With a full warranty.

That is correct I traded in when I changed my camera last year but I don't think Jessops allow that.

I suppose they were getting squeezed from both sides better prices on web better service from high street stores.

We'll look elsewhere, and something will replace it, I'd guess. It's evolution.

Maybe at that point, small specialist shops will be back in abundance, as people tire of being unable to go anywhere but the web. Same happened with the high street moving to retail parks.

Who would have thought second hand shops would become fashionable again? They are certainly springing up around me.
