I have recently bought a new lens and considered the extra £20 I paid by buying it in a good local camera shop that put it on a camera and let me try it out money well spent.

Not so sure about that. Everyone I know in the amateur photography community buys their lenses and camera bodies in store. All the other bits are generally got on-line, yeah, but the general consensus round my way is that the risk of ending up with non-UK stock (and then having manufacturer warranted problems) is too high if you buy on-line. That and the lack of trust in the postal service.
If you think of it as 'us' verses 'them', then it's probably your side that are the villains.

    WICKES might go soon IMO.

The reason; Disinterested staff that avoid customers, generally very poor product range, often other firms products re - packaged too ensure fewer units per package thus maximising profits (ficsher rawl plugs for example). Dreadful overly loud musak.

    So wrong on every count.

Wickes survived on being generally cheaper. If that's no longer the case, or the shopping experience has become just too awful then you could be right.
No-one would remember the Good Samaritan if he'd only had good intentions. He had money as well.

Jessops is another 'browsing' store going under. No one buys a camera on impulse, you take advice, research, then find the cheapest price.

I'd never darken their doors as there are plenty of online companies providing the same product for a lot less.

    Example.

    Nikon 70-300mm lens

    £420 at Jessops online
    £322 lowest price online.

    Why would you use them?

I bought a CANON EOS 650D with a 28-135mm lens from Jessops ,paid for extra warranty( don't usually bother) and they were cheaper than most online including Wex photography who are usually good.I wonder if the warranty is valid its through Domestic & General Insurance.

For Christmas I asked for Jessops gift cards so I can buy another lens ..........I have £130-00 in gift cards which I don't think they will accept now....:(

I've always found Jessops staff excellant ...
