This is often stated, but rarely (if ever) demonstrated.
Sainsburys have posted a rise in sales. That's good news? It's reported today on the BBC. Tescos reported a fall in sales not too long back. Bad news. BBC reported it.
What key things do you see that are not reported, that you would like to see reported. Just remember, it has to be deemed to be within the public interest, otherwise the BBC website would just be flooded with every single story of the day.0 -
The high street has been struggling for years with competition pressures from the internet. Given also that the past decades boom in retail has been mainly fueled by credit than the credit squeeze is going to have a major effect now.
It's naive though to think the cuts in jobs and pay freezers haven't also played their part in ever more shops and business struggling. People who have or are in danger of losing their jobs do not go out on spending. Likewise people who have had their pay frozen do not freely splash cash out on non essentials. Also there is the knock on effects to be taken into account. If a shop or factory goes then those people will not be going into town during their lunch breaks etc to spend in the local economies.
It's not possible to just point to one factor like the internet and place all the blame there it's a combination of factors. Currently the mood in retail on the high street is generally grim, people are still not seeing any upturn in sight and many expect it to get worse. Christmas is always hyped up but many shops for the last couple of years have reduced the quantity of items they brought in for the season yet still they are being left with excess. All the news channels showed the shoppers hitting the sales straight after Christmas but it's now deadly quite in town. At least one major retail I know of has still got Christmas stock in it's stock rooms as the sales have not done as well this year as previous, despite what the news reports. People are still tightening their belts and not spending. It will be interesting to see what happens as HSBC own 50% of Jessops - apparently they wrote off their debts last year on the proviso that they own 50%. Wonder who will try and buy them.. Although to tell you the truth I can't see anyone who would be willing to take that risk. Shame really.

I suspect their is still a space in the market for Jessops, but with a much reduced store portfolio.
Oddly it semed to be announcing bumper profit just six months ago. Perhaps the problems are more cashflow related than an unviable business.0 -
