As above I also have just recently (last weekend in fact) bought a camera on a 6 month credit period and just wondered where all this leaves that arrangement.....?

Do you have the camera already?
If so, it's likely the credit agreement is with a 3rd party and will be largely unaffected.

    Hi

    Can anyone advise please?

Went to a Jessops store on New Year's Eve and paid to get some old cine films transferred to DVD. They said it would take about 10 days and not heard anything yet. I'll try to go to the store tomorrow and hope it's open but will they still be able to carry out the job and if not would I at least get the cine films back as they are very precious to the family.

    many thanks, Gary

Hi am pretty sure they are sent to a third party company, so you may end up having to pay them, am sure your films will be safe and in the worse case you have to go elsewhere to get them transferred.

Once a company goes into administration, they no longer exist in customer terms. That's why outside organisations are brought in to recoup the money for the creditors.

There's a simple way to protect yourself - never buy gift cards/vouchers.

Agreed. A modicum of common sense in this current economic climate should dictate that it might be somewhat foolhardy to buy gift vouchers. Most consumers are never aware of a Company's financial position until something like this happens and again often the first thing to go or is no longer accepted, is the humble gift voucher.

I'm surprised that with the closure of several well known High Street names over the last few years, that gift vouchers haven't just died a natural death and consumers just stop buying them. Alternatively, the Government could help consumers by outlawing the practice of gift voucher sales, but that is also pretty unlikely.
  • What about purchases made via a cashback site? Would you ever see the money ? Do you claim against the cashback site or what. Jessops were running 2 deals 10p for checkin in store and 2-5% for general purchases. What's the about getting cashback back if/when a company goes into administration.

Funds used to buy gift vouchers should be held separately, not as part of the companies assets. In the event of the company going into administration they could simply refund holders of gift cards.

Of course, then companies would have no desire to sell gift cards as they wouldn't be able to use them as an interest free loan...
  • I think it's high time there was a change in the law to prevent firms from refusing to accept vouchers when they go into administration. It's theft, they've sold, a credit note, to a customer as they then refuse to honour that credit note simply to save some money that would be illegal under most conditions why should bankruptcy protect the store with the problem and not protect the customers it's pathetic.
Yes I totally agree with you, and I believe a change in the law is needed to stop this, and make those well paid executives liable in some form instead of giving them large payouts ( RBS - BBC as examples). Perhaps Martin could start a campaign to get this going

Thats exactly what i was thinking too! Will even leave name and adress so they can contact police. If it's good enogh for them to steal £50 from my wife it's good enough for me!

How is the warranty affected in this case? The contract is with the retailer isn't it? If my camera should develop a fault, who do I pursue?
