On almost every scam and rip-off that's posted on this Moneysavingexpert forum there is a group who want to defend the scam and blame the victim.

    Unhelpful and suspicious.

Thats because most of the people who cry "scam or rip off" haven't been scammed or ripped off. They just don't read whats in front of them before handing over their money. They aren't victims, they're just careless.

Unfortunately there are a lot of people on this forum who seem to think that GROWN ADULTS should take no responsibility for THEIR OWN actions.

Perhaps you can explain since you have offered the "victims" so much useful advice on this thread, where is the scam in a company providing a service.

In this case we have a website that makes it perfectly clear that they are not the IPS and that they are providing a service that is available elsewhere for free. They also make it very easy for people to get their money back - IF THEY READ THE T&Cs THAT THEY AGREED TO.

Unfortunately some people are too stupid or lazy to read the information that is clearly put in front of them. These companies make their money from those type of people - it's a rip-off, but it is not a scam. Had they charged for a service and then just kept the money that would be a scam.

I think meer53 & gb12345 have explained the situation perfectly.

In this instance - and the same goes for the EHIC websites which have been changed to make things very clear that you are paying for something that you can get for free - there is no scam or rip-off, just people who don't read what's in front of them.

Suspicious? Not at all, just not sympathetic to people who don't read what they are signing up to and then rant on here, ring banks, credit card companies, Hipay etc to get a refund and thereby compound their stupidity by not reading the website (yet again) because it clearly says you can get a refund if you go about it the right way.

Unhelpul? Not at all. I think you'll find in this thread, I've advised a number of people to follow the correct route to get a refund. I just don't like people insisting they've been ripped off when they haven't.

On almost every scam and rip-off that's posted on MSE, there isn't a scam or rip-off at all, just personal error.

There are lots of references to this site online - and as a result I'm pretty sure they have changed the wording in there front page. I was caught out by this site as I thought I had gone thought to the government site which offers a FREE similar service - ie they will print out your form and send it to you - I paid £40 to uk passport net thinking I was on the government site and paying for my daughters passport. These people know exactly what they are doing and are not providing a check and send service merely a filling in service which now costs £40 - I have asked for a refund and threatened to take it further - my google link took me straight to forms - it's only when I got e forms back that I realised I hadn't even paid for the passport. Guardian money have asked google to take off the links which they initially did but have now put them back up. There are similar scams for other free products.

A search for "UK Passport Renewal" takes you to the page forms.html on their website (assume that is the page you went to).

It quite clearly tells you on that page that it is not the IPS website and what you are getting for your £40.

Unfortunately like the majority of posters on this thread you have failed to read what you are signing up for and then cry "scam" when you realise how stupid you've been.

Had you read the T&Cs you would have got a full refund (as others on here have done) - it's probably too late for that now, although I think they do offer a partial refund once the forms have been sent.
  • Thank goodness Lloyds TSB no longer accept IE 3 and stored passwords!

As for sites, when they ask for your money, check what you are getting for it. As for this site, it provides a service, to check your application. So does the post office, also at a charge! No one calls that a scam!

I don't think they claim to offer a 'check and send' service'

This is what they say their service covers:

What you get from our services that the IPS do not offer:
    • Application Checked for errors & omissions
    • Instant Email Confirmation
    • 24/7 Online Support & Telephone support
    • Web Site available 24/7
    • Telephone Application Service
Our service is not connected to or affiliated with the Passport Office or any UK Government department. Our service fee (Standard £40.00 / Express £45.00) is payable on completion of the form on this website, but you will not be required to pay the passport application fee until you receive and return the printed copy of your application from IPS. The services on this website may also be available without charge from other sources.

  • Hey everyone,

Im the latest sucker to fall for this website and im so annoyed with myself that i didnt read the full website but even more annoyed that they can get away with this. I know they fall within the law but for f*ck sake!

    This shouldnt be allowed!!!!

I have however received a refund unlike alot of people on this forum.

However... i have a particular set of skills where i can get them de-indexed from Google VERY quickly using hardcore blackhat methods which will stop people from falling into the same trap and losing money. I can't stop them from using adwords but i can certainly stop any organic traffic flowing to them from people searching for "passport renewal" etc.

But im not sure if i should do it or not though....

    What do you think?
