  • Good morning all

Flowers can I bend your ear please, I brought this this morning at hobby craft for £4.99 8443349781_137f85d369.jpg

It has 20 6x6" squares, do you think that will be big enough as my first quilt? or do you think I should shoot back and grab another? I dont think the quilt will be big enough to do anything with if I only use 20 squares but I don't want to over streach myself on my first quilt.

  • Patchwork and quilting is good for exercising your maths brain - not least because we buy fabric in metric sizes but most quilt patterns are in imperial measurements :D

Assuming you use the standard 1/4 inch seams then each 6 inch square will be 51/2 inches when made up. It you just stitch the squares together with 4 squares wide x 5 squares deep you will have a quilt top which measures 22 inches wide by 27.5 inches long. This isn't big enough for any type of bed quilt - even a cot quilt would normally measure something like 28 x 52 inches.

What did you have in mind?

You could consider a table runner as your first attempt - I would stitch 3 squares wide and 6 squares long which would give you a runner 16.5 by 33 inches.

You could double the size by buying another pack of squares or you could do plain squares in between each patterned square. Or plain strips between the patterned squares - the most common size of strip is 21/2 inches cut which makes up to 2 inches when sewn.

Don't know if any of this makes sense but hope it helps

    Lovely colours BTW
  • Thank you that makes perfect sense, they did have a roll of smaller squares I might pop back and grab one of them they were also £4.99. I think I'll use some plain squares in between to make it a little bigger thanks for your help

    Hi everyone.

Sorry for being AWOL but I was rushed in to hospital 3 weeks yesterday and was diagnosed with cervical cancer, so for the past 3 weeks I have been prodded and jabbed with needles.
Had my fist chemo treatment while I was in there, 2nd lot is due on 14th February, but I am home now!

Anyways I have managed a little catch up and I think I have added all the new people and updated peoples finishes, but if I have missed anyone please let me know, I will check in when I can :)
