I know the hoary old saying is that women are meant to be fantastic drivers, far better than stupid men and sense just oozes from every eyelash.

The real reason women traditionally were charged less is that they had less claims as they made less claims than men. The reality is, on average, women drive less miles per year than men and more familiar locations. Truck drivers, delivery personnel, reps, agriculture, by in large, these are jobs for the boys. Not saying that women are incapable of being truck drivers, but the reality is most driving jobs are done by men. Therefore, men are more likely to spend more time exposed to the possibility of being involved in an incident => more likely to make a claim.

Added to that, when you see a couple using a car, it's often the man driving due to him wanting to feel manly or - whatever reason here. No need to deny psychological realities!

I know, women won't want to hear that and I'm just a big male chauvinist...

Go on then, I'll bite. Do you have any evidence to support this assertion, other than from the Institute of Some Bloke Down The Pub? ;)

Actually, I'll save you the bother, section 4 of this report suggests that women have a higher risk of accidents and injury per mile than men, so it looks like you're right. :T

Temper that with the finding that men are more likely to have a fatality per mile driven, which suggests that we get in bigger accidents, and therefore may well be a higher insurance risk, even considering miles driven. :o

    Let's call it a draw. ;)

    LMAO.

To be honest, I've never bought into the stereotype of women being magically safer or men being magically better when they reach 50 or whatever gets bleated on about. IMO, you have a driving license, therefore you know all you need to know to get behind a wheel. We're all human, it's possibly for everyone to make mistakes, be it misjudging a distance, error of judgement, error of risking taking your eyes off the road "that one time"... I don't think having one set of genetalia or another precludes you from any of that.

But yes, I do find a certain perverse irony in that women are now forced to be more equal than they previously shouted for.

FWIW, I worked at an insurer doing data entry for several months whilst as a student. Nope, that doesn't mean I know every damn thing, but I've entered a fair number of quote forms and yes I had a bent fascination in how particular cases turned out. And no, that doesn't qualify me any more than you either!

i think that shows im a considerate driver despite my age :)

    x :o

Absolutely. But how do we know that you're not going to get in with a bad crowd, shoot up loads of drugs like we all know you horrible smelly young people do and go driving mad through the country in a car you couldn't possibly handle?

OK, sarcasm aside, though I agree with you, what you or I say matters not a jot. If you could provide concrete proof to the insurance industry as a whole, that'd be grand. But I doubt you'll be able to find anything too convincing anytime soon.

Sucks to be young. And middle aged. And old.

Hmmm... I made myself sad :(

Haha not quite my style I'm afraid!!

And like all the other young drivers...I can't prove on paper I'm a great driver so I have to endure there high prices like everyone else! 23 this year so maybe just maybe it will start to come down! ha

    :)

    Xx

Well that begs the question is it worth just insuring something like a scooter (even if you never drive it) for a couple of years to rack up some NCD?

I'm not sure that NCD on a scooter would count for car insurance.

A great many years ago my mum did exactly that with a moped. Some insurers at least (eg Tesco) will recognise motorbike no claims bunuses when you take out a car policy... whether they'd extend that to a moped or scooter these days I have no idea.

    :rotfl:

Not to mention I'm sure statistically more women drive in the 'screaming kids in the back' situation than men do.
Doesn't help my case as a bloke that this is exactly how I backed into a bollard!
