OP are you saying that if you were the person that needed the time of for a medical appointment you would use your holidays?

I wouldn't and didn't when I had my wisdom teeth out as I was booked in the hospital and put to sleep to get mine taken out.

You have to be joking I have had my wisdom teeth out trust me it is a real reason to be off sick, do you have to rearrange your illness to fit the needs of the buisness now? Unbelievable..........
With you there - I had infection upon infection and bleeding and all sorts.

I had all 4 of my wisdom teeth taken out at the same time and I had to have 4 days off although I was signed off (at the time) for 20 days but never got paid so had to go back in and was as rough as hell and could harldy eat or talk. Bruises all over my face and under my jaw, the stiches so tight.

Two of the teeth were impacted and they had to hold me down in the chair to get them out and I had brusies too on my shoulders after!

All this was done under sedation and not a general!

The 4 days I took were unpaid and one day at SSP and even then the boss was not impressed.

Blimey - I have said I am willingly offering the time off just that I don't want them to take a week unpaid leave given that they have 28 days unused fully paid holiday coming to them. If we could afford to have higher staff levels we would believe me.

As I have already said, really you have no choice bar the actual day of the operation.

In most jobs you have to use holiday for all appts

Making up the hours & taking it as holiday amount to the same thing. Holiday is paid, making up hours is paid.

I don't know what company you work for but when my staff ask to make time up for whatever reason it is unpaid.

Ok well our staff are happy, treated well and fairly and get more paid holiday than most of their friends. We have a great team and they like working with us. We took all of them for big night out with fab meal and drinks all on us the weekend before Xmas and they all get Xmas presents from us, wine on their birthday etc as well as me bending over backwards to give them specific days off for special occasions, appointments, children's school activities etc.
Times are much tougher than when we first had the business and I'd love to JUST be Mr Nice guy but for the benefit of their jobs and mortgages as well as ours I have to balance nice and sensible.

Is this the excuse your using to try and get your staff member to use his holidays?

This has nothing to do with the time of needed for his operation or are you saying you don't want him to claim ssp?

He can take leave for the OP day, the recovery will be sick leave. Not sure why he's asked for leave annual or unpaid for the whole week tbh as he doesn't need to use leave when he's off sick.

It may be better to book leave if he only gets spp

In your scenario the teeth time off would paid. The days they work to "make the time back" would be unpaid.

So if they are off for 5 days paid for teeth. Then "make up" 5 days unpaid then have 28 days paid hol that is...

28 paid days plus 5 paid teeth days giving 33 paid days then minus 5 "making up" unpaid days gives 28 days paid time off including teeth days. Just same as taking teeth days from their holiday. See?

If you think they'd rather call it making the time back that works for me!

What I needed to check was whether legally planned app like this dictates sick leave and if so obviously I can't ask them to make time back or take as hol.
