Are people entitled to book unpaid leave to have teeth out

  • This is a medical problem and i'm sure a doctor/dentist wil sign him off for a week, if he doesn't want to self certify. There is no way he can work customer facing with a face like a hamster. I had a week self certified and a booked hospital appointment took me over by 1 day. The gp was more than happy to write me a sick certificate for this appointment.

Excuse me OP but it's you that needs to read the post carefully you were speaking to another poster and not me as I never said that to you.

Read your post #32. You quote me saying to another poster that I offered holiday but your post 32 was to say

"I don't see where you are offering SSP" errr no because I said I'd offered holiday I didn't say I'd offered SSP.

but how does the law decide the ones in the middle? Or do employers make that call & instigate SSP?

The employer does not make a call.

If the employee is not fit to perform their duties they are sick.

We now have fit notes which can give scope for alternative duties if someone has particular issues that stop them doing certain activities.

for self certification it is the employee that decides

I suspect the OP himself has private health cover and has no idea how long the wait for NHS appointments can be. Many operations are now day care when in the past they required several days in hospital-recovery time is still required.

My company enrolls all staff into a private medical and dental insurance specifically to avoid absences at peak times -and the ability to schedule non urgent medical procedures at off peak times. The premium costs are tax efficient and lead to lower sickness absence and better control of scheduling-not to mention better staff retention -it's a valued benefit.

If your business is so seasonally weighed it might be an option to investigate...it could do wonders for your poor staff morale too.

Wisdom teeth are funny things -no-one really knows how their body will react-some people sail though and can be back in a couple days others get bad bruising, infections etc and can be off for a couple of weeks. Such a pity you have to employ humans and not robots.

The OP who seems to be ignoring what I am saying, was asking about who decides what type of leave it is. I have now put a link up which should clarify the circumstances in which you would offer and should offer unpaid leave.

Otherwise we'd all be off as and when we wanted to.

Hey hey, why on earth do you think I'm ignoring you. Or did you not mean me (I am the OP but did you mean paddle john was ignoring you?). I have just this sec read your post - not even had chance to open the link as in the time it took me to type a reply to an earlier post and hit post there were many many other posts added. Me not replying in two mins doesnt mean I am ignoring you. I read your post (and will read your link) with interest. I thought I was reasonably fast on this phone but to over type all the incorrect predictive words do as to post a fairly legible message (and to plug into charger as battery died) took a bit of time. So sorry you interpret that as ignoring.

OP where in that sentence does it say that I accuse you of not allowing holiday!!!!

Do you not know the difference between holiday and ssp????

Looks like your reading something that isn't there.
