I just don't get it - the first net book which was identical worked fine, and this one just won't connect.... .

The exact same thing with mine and the Mrs' laptops. Identical Acer Aspire 5720s, bought same time and same place. Different driver versions = her's connected no problems, mine refused. I updated the driver and it worked. Small things can throw big spanners in the works, you just need to methodically go through them.

Right, I'm gonna prattle on forever about drivers, so let's get that one out the way.

    Can you-
    1. Plug your problem laptop into your router via an ethernet cable.
    2. Go to start menu in windows and in search box type "device manager" and select it.
    3. Click continue.
    4. Find Network Adapters in the list. One will be your (probably Atheros) wireless.
    5. Double click it.
    6. Select Driver tab.
    7. Click update driver and follow the instructions.
    8. Try to connect wirelessly.
    9. Report back.
  • There's a Win 8 64bit Atheros driver dated 28 Dec 12 for the Aspire One 725:

  • You can also check whether or not the WlanSvc (WLAN Autoconfig) has started and is in Auto.

    1. To customize Windows 8 services configuration and to change services startup type, you'll need to open Services Manager. You can open it by using any of following ways:

    a. Move your mouse cursor to bottom-left corner of screen and right-click on the corner, you'll see a menu containing various system shortcuts. Its called "Win+X Menu" because you can also access it by pressing WIN+X keys together. Now click on "Computer Management" option and it'll open a new window.

    OR

    b. Open My Computer and you can click on "Manage" button present in the ribbon.

    OR

    c. If you have enabled My Computer icon on Desktop using Desktop Personalization window, you can right-click on the icon and select "Manage" option.

Once Computer Management window is opened, click on "Services and Applications -> Services" in left-side pane. It'll show the services configuration screen.

    2. Alternatively, you can directly open the same screen using services.msc command in RUN dialog box.

    3. Once you access services manager, you are ready to configure Windows 8 services startup type. You can sort the services by their startup type by clicking on "Startup Type" column. It'll help you in find all running services easily and quickly.

    4. Scroll all the way down the alphabetical list to WlanSvc and check that it is running.

If it finished downloading you still need to install it.

Go to your Downloads folder and double-click on the downloaded Atheros driver file to install. It's a zip so you'll have to extract it.
