As a temporary fix, why don't you just plug into the router with an ethernet cable? If that gives you network access, then it's either the wireless function on your laptop, or a wireless issue with the router. Borrow another device (e..g a smartphone) and see if you can connect with that. If you can, it's the laptop.
No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)

I have connected the laptop with the cable and it worked fine...

The laptop offers me the options to connect to other networks two with sky, and that is named Eleanor, and one named after the town I live in...

Does that mean it is likely to be the modem - even that was working fine last Thursday?

OK so used my phone to scan for wifi networks - and mine did not appear (again) so does this mean it is an issue with the virgin box thing? (tried rebooting, and no joy)...

    many thanks,

    xxxx

The Wi-Fi channel on the SuperHub may have changed in the meantime.

If nothing can see the Superhub, maybe the wireless is switched off as a result of the rebooting. Login through a cable connection to the hub and check under "Wireless Network Settings" that Wireless is switched on.

Does the router have 'register' button? My old O2 router wouldn't allow new devices unless they tried to connect within 30 seconds of the button being pressed.

Also, my Acer's Atheros card really struggled with my current Sky router til I updated the driver.

What security does the Superhub say it is using and what channel is it on - from the same Wireless Network Settings screen?
If the channel is on Auto, either set it to a specific channel between 1 and 11 (don't use 12 or 13 as IME Atheros adapters don't like it) or run inSSIDer on a connected PC (if you need to download it) and it will tell you what channel the Superhub is using.

You then need to make sure your wireless network configuration is using the same security.
