Atheros is just a popular supplier of wireless adapters, that aren't compatible with everything in common use....
If you have the original netbook still connecting, check its settings and replicate them.
You could try removing the current wireless network and then adding it again.I’m a Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on the In My Home MoneySaving, Energy and Techie Stuff boards. Atheros is a manufacturer of wireless adapters. Acer often (always??) use them.
Go into device manager (you can find it in search) and see what is says under network adapters. You can then plug in via ethernet and update the driver. This helped me but may do nothing for you...... but it's worth a go.0 -

On Windows 8 I found I had security type set to WPA2-Personal and Encryption type to TKIP. Where on Windows 7 I have Encryption to AES. Both are connecting to the same VM Superhub, but that was the only way I could get Windows 8 to connect.

OK this is getting a bit beyond me now...
Is there a way of finding a service that will just do this for me? I can't take it to the local IT shop it's too far away to pick up my signal.
It's a waste of money having it, and not being able to connect, it's become the most exspensive paper weight i've ever bought...

Did you update the driver?
Have you ever logged on to the router to change the wireless key/security level or do you use it as it comes out of the box?
I can give you a bit of help with either.0 -
