SarEl gave me some great advice, which helped me approach my employer differently and obtain a fair settlement.
Did I 'like' it? No.
Did I appreciate it? Yes
Was the advice correct? Yes
Did I benefit from it? Yes
Thank you SarEl.0 -
Sorry to join the derailing. I really hope you don't leave again, SarEl. Your advice (and that of LazyDaisy and Kiki) makes this forum worth reading.

I don't post often here, but I also find SarEl posts massively helpful.
Isn't the whole issue one of style? Isn't it expected that a barrister wouldn't waste time in niceties but say it as it is, whilst many posters here are vulnerable and expecting kindship?
I also wonder if it might be a cultural thing. If I ask for support from my foreign friends, they tell it as it is, but I have notice that a number of my English friends will naturally tell me what I want to hea, to make me feel better, when actually, I know deep inside that it is not how it is. They mean well and yes, it is comforting, but if I ask advice from someone it is to have someone's else perspective to reflect on, not to be told what I might have got wrong, hence asking for advice!0 -

I agree. However, I think one of the problems is that when something has gone wrong, people's emotions are up and they aren't quite 'ready' for practical advice. I always remember when I was told the whole firm I worked at was being made redunant and they were closing. That night I told a friend, and she began by giving me advice and suggestions. But actually I was totally devastated because I loved the job and what I did, and couldn't afford to be made redundant with my £400 payment, and needed some there theres. I asked her to stop, and we got into an argument about it.
The next day I pulled myself together and began sorting it out.
But of course when people post here you can't see the emotions behind it - so they fight against suggestions given - although of course it's not the fault of posters who offer help either, although it can often be blunt/matter of fact when people see it as their jobs/lives.
I missed SarEl when she left, and have learnt lots from her over the years. People don't realise her background and that they would be paying thousands for the same advice elsewhere, so she along with posters such as zzzLazyDaisy should be valued."There is no medicine like hope, no incentive so great, and no tonic so powerful as expectation of something better tomorrow." - Orison Swett Marden0 -
Surely blunt matter of fact info is what helps people, not lots of 'hun' and (((hugs)))..................
....I'm smiling because I have no idea what's going on ...:)
