hubby had accident in work on Xmas eve and is now on ssp for at least the next 3 months which i believe to be around £85. I lost my job in November and have just found a part time job of 12 hours for £72 a week so a weekly income of £157 how on earth do people manage on this??? (previous income £550 between the two of us) apparently not entitled to any help with council tax or mortgage either. Any advice would be really appreciated as at this moment we can't see a way out. I am looking for extra work but there is nothing at the moment i check with job center everyday, go online, even cold calling.

What did you want to happen? What were your expectations ? Did you want the same income as before to keep coming in somehow ? I dont understand what the question is.0

You need to look at your outgoings
Income of £680 per month
mortgage?
council tax?
bills?
debts?
Possibly speak to your mortgage provider and ask if a payment break/interest only is an option
If you have debts, do likewise with them0 -
Post a SOA on the debt-free board and people will advise on how to cut weekly costs.0

You are sadly finding out that in certain circumstances you get nada help (this is one as you are both employed)
But .. I'd ask if you can get an underlying benefit (eg income jsa) to passport you to smi and council tax.
However as there is a 13 week wait even if accepted
Can you ask your mortgage company for a payment break?
Ironically if renting, you'd get help due to low income.0 -

Since the OP is working for less than 16 hours can the OP's partner apply for Income support?
I know this would immediately seem not possible but because of the housing costs then I think he may have a claim. Mmmm, not sure.
I would have though that at the very least they would be entitled to Council Tax Benefit.
OP, I would suggest that you ring Job Centre Plus or the number for Income Support and ask, explaining about your housing costs.
Have you been receiving working tax credits previously? Give them a ring too and see if you are eligible now.
I am sure there is help available.
Perhaps a visit to CAB is in order.
If you are not entitled then you will need to do as previously advised and speak to mortgage lender etc etc
PS Have put your details in to the benefit calculator on the turn2us site and it suggests IS, CTB and possibly Working tax credit.0 -

I keep forgetting about income support. Any means tested benefits would take them onto passported claims for smi and ctb.
I think it sucks when low incomes get help with rent but mortgages don't.
I assumed based on their income in they over limit for wtc0 -
Do you have savings, or own another property as well as the one you live in? This would affect any entitlement to benefits. If you have savings you are expected to live on those.
I haven't bogged off yet, and I ain't no babe

As I said before I am not sure about this situation but something is telling me that there is some sort of 'link' between SSP and IS although because of the 13 week rule before SMI starts I am not sure this would be very helpful.
However, just in case the OP's husband is not fit for work after his SSP ends it might be worth putting in a claim now so that the 13 weeks start running.0 -
thanks to everyone who has taken the time to reply. We have no savings(used these when hubby had heart surgery a few years back with no help then either) or other property. Ironic that you get help when renting but not otherwise (not knocking anyone who is renting). not entitled to wtc as they ask for previous years income which was way over the threshold. Am trying to get an appointment with benefits advisor so hopefully something positive will come from that. will ring mortgage company too. Once again thankyou and a Happy New Year to you allxxx0
