I'm in a bit of a turmoil at the moment........after receiving a phone call from my sister to say Mum has died. :(

After the initial shock, its dawned on me that the two of us are going to have to empty her 2 bed bungalow, garage and shed. No idea how we're going to find room for the things we cant possibly get rid of - as both our houses already seem packed solid! Looks like I'll have to try and do some ruthless dehoarding here in the next few weeks.

So sorry to hear this PudseyDB, hugs and kind thoughts.xx

What sort of size walk in are we talking about, LIR?

Not huge. There will infact be two, so I am thinking maybe to have the smaller one shelved (cheaper than drawers? And no place for things to get buried) through out for foldable clothes, and the other one. (I think it's two metres long as mainly hanging space...my dresses, dh's suits and shirts).
  • So sorry Pudsey, hugs, and just take care and look after your self. You are not alone dealing with the house stuff, you have all your friends here to support you.

You might still need baskets for some items, and an internal CoD (the really light sliding type of drawers) properly divided up could be useful for underwear, socks, etc.

Then, there's how you would prefer to store shoes, racks or boxes. And hanging space for handbags. Maybe even accessories, like any jewellery, hats, etc.

Will you be having a full length mirror in there?

I suppose if you look and see what exactly you have in the way of clothes, it would give a better idea what you need to store.

Don't forget the working/walking with animals stuff. Do you want to be able to see those everytime you walk in there?

    ***

How about having each dvivided up with full length for his coats, etc, for about 50cm, then two rails for his tops/jackets above, trousers below for, say, 1m, then pigeon holes for shoes for the last 50cm up to about waist height, then drawer storage for socks/boxers/jumpers then ties, scarves, hats above that? Oh, and along with the socks etc, maybe somewhere for cuff links, etc.

Depending on how many clothes he has, maybe it would be nice for him to have his own closet. And he would be less likely to notice you've disposed of something if he didn't see all your clothes everyday

Oh, and you'd need room for a chair to sit on to put shoes on/dress, if you aren't going to risk carrying out loads of things, changing your mind and having to make yourself put them back in there :)

You might still need baskets for some items, and an internal CoD (the really light sliding type of drawers) properly divided up could be useful for underwear, socks, etc. . Baskets make great storage. I was thinking of using baskets, like laundry baskets, for socks (this is what we do now) and knickers and yard wear

Then, there's how you would prefer to store shoes, racks or boxes. And hanging space for handbags. Maybe even accessories, like any jewellery, hats, etc. . Jewellery is somewhere else, so that's ok, hats are in boxes....mostly...you just knew we would have a fair few hats, right? And that's how I prefer to keep them.

Will you be having a full length mirror in there?
dunno, ATM self esteem makes me react badly to mirrors. I would like this to change and even thought mirror lining, though rather pass! in style terms would help with space and light.....dunno

I suppose if you look and see what exactly you have in the way of clothes, it would give a better idea what you need to store.
:rotfl: yes,.....Well.....I think it's safe to say we will both always have too many clothes, not least because presuming life stays good we need different sorts of clothes for different things.

Don't forget the working/walking with animals stuff. Do you want to be able to see those everytime you walk in there?
(nope, I think, but am not sure, the basket/hamper solution might work here

Really sorry you hear your news Pudsey.

Re clearing your mum's house - Try not to rush at it to much. I had about 3 months to clear my parents house.

I probably brought too much back here, but over time found that the things that I couldn't possibly let go, were actually quite easy to let go.

Also, when you get going on a house clearance, I think you get an inner toughness, and as you know you can't keep everything, you get the strength move things out of the house.

But it's early days, try not to think about it too much, there'll be time in the coming weeks for all that.

Just concentrate on the immediate arrangements that need doing and look after your self at present.

By coincidence, I brought some more stuff down from the loft today for sorting, including the last of my parents things. I was actually quite impressed with myself, as it has already been thinned out a lot. From my quick look, there are a few things that I know I can let go of, but there are also a few others that are certain keepers.

I'll be working on these boxes over the next few days/weeks. I want this to be the last time I do this excercise so what I end up with will be the things to keep for ever. I'm also going to get proper plastic storage boxes to keep them in. Therefore, it'll be neat and tidy, I can see at a glance what is in the box, and I know that they have been sorted, and won't need to look again. I'll be doing this with everything in my loft..... the overall process will take some time !

However, I did a very quick hit of a mound of birthday and anniversary cards. There were probably about 100. I'm keeping 10 These are for 25th and 30th wedding anniversaries and a few cards from people no longer with us.

    So good progress made.

Re courses. I got semi swamped with pmms, I wish work had me on commission! I posted on a few threads.

They cleared me to tutor one of the courses (I won't say which!) but I don't think they have enough work at the moment - I wonder what will happen after the latest rush.

I have been sent an application form by email which I can forward to anyone pmming me their email addy, if you are genuinely interested.

You can only do one course at a time, but they are open to organisations - that was what they were originally designed for.

The age limit is 19 and you can't be in full time education. Open Uni is fine though as it isn't FT.
Erma Bombeck, American writer: "If I had my life to live over again... I would have burned the pink candle, sculptured like a rose, that melted in storage." Don't keep things 'for best' - that day never comes. Use them and enjoy them now.
  • Sorry to hear that Pudsey. I hope the support here will help you through this very difficult time.

    Like the wardrobe advice jojo.

Well today I finally, after months of dithering, went and bought a steam mop for our floors (only carpet in house is in lodgers room).
I am now officially in love with it:smileyhea:D, as are my floors. Bathroom (vinyl flooring) came up a treat in 2 mins and all nice and dry. Hall and stairs done (wooden). Many months since I have been able to face doing them. I never found a conventional squeezy mop to be that effective and the whole bucket thing just put me off and I invariably ended up on my knees.
Mop is very light weight and easy to use and quick to heat up and no chemicals needed to be added to water.

My biggest dilemma was that if I had ordered on line rather than picked up in shop, I could have got a free cake tin gift - agonised over this, but I know I don't actually need another cake tin and the last free gift I got remains unused. So I forced myself to forgo it and have the less hassle of getting it direct than having a parcel turn up when I am not here. Hurrah for being able to turn down free stuff I don't really need:T

It's nice to feel my home is a little less grubby tonight.

The true test is if I now use it regularly.
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days attack me at once
  • Pudsey sorry to hear your news. Just to echo what others have said and not worry about the things at your mum's. Be gentle with yourself.

Not much dericharding here at the moment but am ensuring very little or nothing is coming in.
