That reminds me.......new question we had this summer "Do you have any family in the US"......presumably saying yes increases the risk of overstay, and therefore a more intensive questioning.

this subject could be the start of a whole new string.

I was asked arriving in Vegas the how much money was I bringing in, when I answered the Immigration person seemed to take offence, secondary questioning as to why I had so much money on me, my very polite answer which went totally over her head was it's 'Vegas', the reply yes it's Vegas but why so much money? This was Immigration, the customs guy who I was passed on to and to whom I gave the form to which declared the over $10k in cash which the Immigration person took offence to and had ringed and ringed in biro and highlighted the amount I had declared just said 'thankyou' and passed me through, the Immigration person was fit to bust.

A friend of mine when a group of us was going through was taken to one side and searched, his new epassport didn't read on the system? He was asked by the female TRS guard why he had a brick of $1,000 in one dollar bills. His answer was one word......'strippers', she went crimson and the guard next to her just laughed.

Another friend was taken off because he was asked for another form of ID for some reason and the guard wouldn't acknowledge his police warrant card and had to wait in the little holding room whilst they checked it all the way back over here. Mind you he is ginger?

There are loads more for another time.

    Day 3 Saturday 7th Sept
Woke up early again, dam that jetlag, asked how we were both feeling after last night… we were both in good shape until I asked how much we’d spent… arghh about $90 OMG!!

We just had a brew and a muffin for breakfast. Not too sure which hotels we visited today but we ended up in Nine Fine Irishmen in NYNY about 2.30pm, didn’t need to wait for a table, stuffed our faces and headed back to our hotel to get changed for our first show of the hols.

Seeing O tonight, so we decided to have a pre-dinner drink in Hyde… not been in here before, last time we were in Vegas (2011) it was the Fontana Bar where we liked to sit on the patio watching the fountains. Anyway we asked for a table on the patio but the hostess said there were no tables available so she sat us on the edge of inside (if that made sense). There were loads of free tables outside so we were a bit hacked off… we were dressed up, me in a dress and heels, John in a shirt, trousers and shoes, but I guess we just weren’t young (we’re in our forties) and trendy enough. When the drinks waitress came over we asked again if we could sit outside, she said “yes, of course” If at first you don’t succeed…..

Had one drink and then headed over to the show which was wonderful, we had seen it before but it was the 10pm show quite early on in our holiday and we could hardly keep our eyes open… this time was much better, our seats were sec 204 row O, we paid $307.90/£200.53 for 2 tickets. After the show we went in Hyde again had one drink and left before bottle service kicked in, when we checked the nightclub drinks menu it was $50 for a bottle of Corona, way out of our league!!

    Day 4 Sunday 8th Sept
Just had a brew for brekkie and went to Grand Cafe Lux for lunch. I decided I’d just have a starter ‘cause I wanted a dessert, I ordered the Cheeseburger Sliders thinking there’d be two… but no there were FOUR!! I managed three (I hate leaving food), no room for dessert, drat. Headed back to get changed to visit Harrahs to see the live band. They were really good.
Don't wait for your ship to come in, swim out to it.

We've had the 'how much money have you got?' question, but never had the medication one before. It's funny you should mention that, because I've read somewhere that you need a letter off your doctor if you are on permanent medication and have it in your hand luggage (which I am and I will), so I'm going down to the doctors tomorrow to see if this is the case and to get one if so.

I always remember the first time we went, and we'd been travelling for hours (Cumbria to London to Vegas) and had never flew long haul before, so we were absolutely shattered and didn't know what to expect. I didn't realise that the immigration people would be so abrupt! I thought I was going to burst into tears! I guess it was only 2 weeks after 9/11 though.

  • Immigration Officer (after several other questions) - How many nights are you in the US?

Me - I leave on Saturday.

Immigration Officer - How many nights are you in the US?

Me - I leave on Saturday.

Immigration Officer - I asked how many nights are you in the US?

    Me - 5, I leave on Saturday.

    Immigration Officer - OK.

And through I went. Why he couldn't just deduce that today is Monday and he's leaving Saturday equals 5 nights I've no idea. I just thought he didn't hear me answer and was stood there looking a bit bemused that he kept asking.
  • i do feel for the officers, the amount of people they must see in a day  - so i appreciate their position and i try to answer their questions exactly, being pleasant and concise.

that makes their life easier and then you're more likely to get a smile or an 'enjoy your vacation' if you're lucky!

i've never found any of them rude, but equally they're not there to be tipped or be the friendly face of the USA :D

Why didn't you just answer 5. He didn't ask when are you leaving Vegas or the USA, not sure why you thought he should do the maths.

I have never had any of the questions mentioned on here and always found them to be pleasant, but if I am asked a question I don't mess them about.

Agreed, I find it's best to just give them direct answers.
  • Saw the Tour of Britain bike ride today, was lucky enough for it to pass by the end of our road! Shame about the weather though, the rain was torrential, the wind was blowing a gale, I'm standing there trying to control a brolly, shivering and thinking I hope the storms and rain have gone in Vegas, I need heat!! :rotfl: Was soaked right through, couldn't believe how fast the rain came down and how strong the winds were, I pity the poor cyclists having to ride in this weather, and then they had Honister Pass to contend with after that!
