We thought at first that we had cover through my husbands bank account, but it just covered European travel. Sounds like you get really good extras with yours. :)

Ours is worldwide cover - it's with RBS Royalties Gold account. I think I said earlier it's £80 to cover my husband's pre existing for the year. I don't think that's too bad. That said he's had his condition all his life but didn't even know about it's so I'd say it's unlikely he's going to need to claim on it (fingers crossed) but I'd never take the chance of actually being abroad without the cover.

We also thought about Roos'n'more, but we'd need to go in the morning, and it's open the day we move to Platinum (the Sunday) so it's not a very convenient day if we don't get checked in.

Why is it not convenient on a moving day if you have a car? Can't you check out, load the car, go there and check in when you return?

    2) we took out insurance in March (as that's when our annual 'renews'), and the missus fell ill initially in May - I stupidly assumed as we'd taken out the insurance before the illness we would be covered, but on reading the terms, discovered a pre-existing condition is anything prior to a trip commencing - we would be covered if the docs said she wasn't well enough to travel, but cover whilst away was a different issue

Different insurers may have different rules, I was told differently by mine. I have declared my husband's condition (which was diagnosed after taking the policy but before the holiday) and it is covered for the trips we had booked at the time of diagnosis. They have said that his pre-existing will not be covered for any additional trips (such as the Thailand trip we booked later) and that we need to pay £80 if we want the pre-existing covered for Thailand, but it's covered for Vegas (and Malta trip we've been on in June).

I hope we're not going to run into any problems with this. I've spoke to them about 3 times between getting the quote and then waiting on more info from on-going appointments and they've told me the same thing each time.

I think it seems a bit unfair nvh if you had to pay extra when you had booked the trip and renewed the insurance before the problem arose.

I'm going to have a read at my policy booklet anyway.

I wouldn't want to park up in the sun with all my stuff in the car in the heat at this time of year. We may have some food as well, or sweets etc that would melt. We could obviously go to check in and dump our stuff with the Platinum if we can't get into our room. It's probably do-able, but we're also going on the Wine Walk the night before, so not sure I want to be driving early on the Sunday either and if we wanted to go dump our stuff at Platinum it probably would need to be quite early to get us back on the road and up to Roos N More. We'll get there one day hopefully.

thanks for the reminder - last I checked a couple of weeks ago they did not have their dates up for October and now they do and they do have an open day while we are there so may go again. :)

    Have a great trip!
Does remembering a time that a certain degree of personal responsibility was more or less standard means that I am officially old?

Also just checked the insurance booklet. It states that they do not cover pre-existing medical if at the time of booking the trip, opening the account (free with bank account) or adding an upgrade - whichever is later.

It would seem that mine is fine, but other insurers may not be the same. I personally don't think it sounds fair to not cover something by saying it's pre-existing even though the cover and trip were in place before the condition. That wouldn't be my definition of pre-existing. I work in insurance (medical, not travel) but our pre-existing is before coverage commencement. Always best to check.

My insurance said the same as Lesley's. Twice when I declared a new condition, I was told that I was covered for any travel already booked, but not for any new travel yet to be booked.

Unless there is more to it, I think it could be worthwhile reporting such an insurer to the financial ombudsman. Financial Ombudsman website states that it's not fair to exclude conditions that arise after the start of the policy.

Not something to be worrying about while away, but might be worth looking into on return to the UK, any payment made could even be recoverable.

Well that was a bit unexpected!! Been in Yosemite last few days hiking half dome and other trails. Drove in via Tioga Pass and you could see the smoke in the distance - glad we'd spent the money to stay in the park as the 120W has been closed at Crane Flats for the last week or so - and most of the out of park places to stay are along the 120. Not a sign of the fire (or smoke) within the valley floor and all news reports said it was moving NE. Got up early today to return to Vegas to find the trees next to (couple of hundred metres) the road east of Crane Flats on fire! Tioga pass now closed east bound for vallley traffic as well as west bound leaving only 1 of the main routes left open into/out-of the park.

Really glad to be back in Vegas, at the Cosmo knocking back the cocktails at the Chandallier.

Again, a lot of folks will be relying on decent holiday insurance to sort out the hotel chaos around the park. (will they have to wait to see if it was an act of god (lightning strike) or a deliberately started fire???? I can imagine insurance not covering AoG's)
