    Morning all,
some possible useful info to keep handy...

    1:
Need to call the US ? dont want to pay high costs, or better still, want to make the call for free ?! :):)
I get free calls on the evening to any 01 & 02 numbers from my landline, as well as free calls from my mobile to the same :)
So for me to call the US = £0.00 :D:D:D

    Dial:
    0161 3113111
Listen to the instructions (lasts about 10 secs), and then your US number, ie: 001 702 000 0000 (example of a las vegas number)

I've used it a few times recently, including a nice long 15 min call when battling with the Luxor over the rates which eventually got wiped and my room comped! ;) but as said, all calls were free..
Same for booking my shows via the MyVegas tele line...

Some hotels (say Luxor/Excalibur) still use wired internet access in the rooms..... If you know your gonna stay in a room with wires and you got iphones/tablets, etc, then unless you take a netbook/laptop, you need a way of getting wifi in your room....
    Soooooooooooooo.............. I bought this:
    http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/MINI-POCKET-WIRELESS-WiFi-ROUTER-11n-AP-NETWORK-TRAVEL-HOTSPOT-for-HOTEL-LAPTOP-/221165157884?pt=UK_Computing_Wireless_Routers&hash=item337e787dfc

This will create your wifi hotspot in your room for your phones to connect.
In tech terms, you configure your device before u go with your own SSID name and password, when you plug it in at the hotel, it will pickup an IP address, so becomes connected... if you have to authenticate, etc through your hotel, that option should still come up on your phone/tablet.....
The thing costs £13 , so not too costly! :)

Thats ok, looking at the travelmoneychecker.

    148.11 in london.

the freely available rate outside london ie Asda is 145.77

You can use them for delivery but it costs £3.90 so depends on the amount you are changing as to whether the additional £3.90 still makes them cheapest.

I changed £400 online yesterday for collection at my closest best deal (which happened to be asda). The same £ today would see me get $3 less.

Have the nationwide CC for fee free spending but am now considering taking more cash if that's the level of loss each day between now and going is going to give me.

Hope you have a great trip and the chances are you will be fine.
Is there anyway you can get insurance to cover your problem

I've now been quoted £647 for insurance to cover my heart but I won't be going down that road. I'm very fit these days, gym 4/5 times a week and running on top of that and a much better diet than when I had the attack.

No angina, absolutely no problems since the operation and my doctor reckons I'm in better condition than the vast majority of the over 35s (I'm 63). I do have a yearly heart check up including a very hard treadmill test and all other test results come back very positive. Sometimes you simply have to way up the odds and take a tiny risk.

Have to admit that this will be my 6th trip to the US without insurance for the heart (everything else is covered) I was simply curious as to what would happen in the worst scenario and thanks I will have a great trip.
    It's someone else's fault.

Try http://www.flexicover.co.uk/ for impaired health insurance to the US.

It's all about expected value, and in your case I think it makes sense to not bother. Yes the cost if something does go wrong could be astronomical, but:

probability of problem x cost if there is a problem <<< probability of problem free x cost of travel insurance

Nor me, but as this poster says he has no home to lose and very little savings, even if the worst happens and he comes home with a ginormous medical bill (ok, the worst would be not to come home at all but you know what I mean:D), what could the hospital do about it?

(I'm not agreeing with or advocating him travelling without insurance BTW)

That's a very selfish, disrespectful and inconsiderate attitude, but each to their own... I'll say no more on the matter.

Just remember that many US hospitals are multi-national corporations. They have no hesitation in sendind a bill. I know they've gone to court with Canadians who have done what the poster said he'd do.

There is also a rumour that they can flag you at US Immigration as a deadbeat (no pun intended). So denied entry to the US or perhaps arrested?

But by that point the poster probably would have learnt his lesson, bought travel insurance and not be heading to the US
