is still $1.48 where we get our currency (Best Foreign Exchange) but it is disturbing...we bought at $1.51 a couple of weeks ago - should have bought before that (hindsight 20/20 and all that).

Need to check what we have in our holiday account for withdrawals and make sure it's in line with expectations now...can't remember the last time it was so low.

You are lucky (is that right) to live in London, most of us have to put up with shocking over the counter exchange rates

I can't get holiday insurance to cover anything to do with my heart, everything else is covered as normal. Does anybody know what would happen should I (extremely unlikely) have a heart issue while on holiday in the US.

It won't make any difference to my trip but just curious about the treatment or lack of it without insurance.

You will likely lose your house if it is yours or be left with a very very large bill, unless of course you are loaded.

I dont know how much it would cost really but if you needed surgery I suspect the above would be true

You would not be denied treatment, you'd just have a huge bill. American hospitals charge for everything down to the box of tissues on your nightstand. You could probably get away with minimal treatment until you could get home, but is a bill of anywhere from 250K really worth risking?

I work in Canada and have seen Americans come up here for holidays and expect to have their surgery done because "it's free healthcare up here". No we send bills. Had a patient come through our ER for surgery for macular degeneration that they'd been putting off for six months because they couldn't afford it due to a lack of insurance. They could afford a trip to the Rockies and were very upset to be told we'd be billing them. A bed on a surgical ward is worth $1400 a day (staff, meals, minimal meds). ICU beds are more expensive. I know a delivery and one night stay, if you had to pay for it would run around 14,000CND$.

A coworkers husband had an MI in Hawaii. They would have lost their house if they hadn't had travel insurance.

No house and not loaded, on pension credit with a little savings. My two daughters bought the trip as a present for me. The odds are tiny, had bypass surgery in 2003 and no problems since, so the risk is tiny although anything is possible. Going on 18th back on Good Friday so fingers crossed.
    It's someone else's fault.

The problem with debit cards is the time it *can* take the authorization to drop off.....sometimes it's only a few days but a couple of times it was two weeks so now I always use a creditcard or put a cash deposit down at check in.

dollar has gone crap, and i mean bad :(
what a totally useless government we have.

Before the announcement, i could get $1.57
After the announcement of devalue, i got $1.52 to £ (so $306 for £200)
Then a few days later, its $1.48 to the £ (so i $306 costs £206)
Today is $1.46 , i dont know what to do, i have £1500 to change, but do i gamble and wait, or potentially lose out more ?! :(
    I dont go until May!

i really wouldn't advise going without insurance. lovely of your daughters to get you such a generous gift, but unfortunately short-sighted.

there's some information and details on the British Heart Foundation website, it maybe worth getting in touch with them to ask for any specialist insurers.

for me, never worth the risk.
