new years eve - whats the point??

People often complain about how how difficult it is to get a taxi at New Year but as an ex driver it's often a very quiet night.
Because many of the pubs were charging to get in you wouldn't have people doing their normal pub crawls, they'd go out early so they could get a seat and then stay there until after midnight. The end of the night would be mad busy with people fighting to get into the cab but between 7pm and midnight you may have sat around and thought you were lucky to do half-a-dozen short fares in 5hrs.Liverpool is one of the wonders of Britain,
What it may grow to in time, I know not what.

I have always loved New Years Eve. As a child I spent many with my grandparents and their generation of other relatives. I have lots of fond memories, it was always a thrill then to stay up till midnight and see the next year in.
In my 20s I spent New Years Eve in some wonderful places. Usually that were ahead of the UK. I would then stay up late into the night phoning friends and family when their locations rolled round to midnight. No kids then, so I could sleep the whole of New Years day if I wanted.
Now I spend it quietly. Tonight some friends are coming over and we are cooking a lovely meal. We will catch up and have a great time. At midnight if it is not raining we will head out to the garden as I get a fab view over the coastal town I live in and the sky will be ablaze with fireworks. Then as we are all around the 40 mark I expect we will flake out and head to bed. Up tomorow for a mid morning brunch and hopefully off out for a long walk. The best day of your life is the one on which you decide your life is your own, no apologies or excuses. No one to lean on, rely on or blame. The gift is yours - it is an amazing journey - and you alone are responsible for the quality of it. This is the day your life really begins.0 -

We can inspire each other in the meantime as to where to stay. I love cottages up there, but on the flip side, ROOM SERVICE
Deal. Hubby has just had the suggestion put to him and he says he would like to very much! GreatWe're doing it :T

I look forward to not washing on New Years Day (as you wash your luck for the upcoming year away) but it will be bed and doggy cuddles as my furry friends are frightened of fireworks:(I must not fear. Fear is the mind-killer.
Fear is the little-death that brings total obliteration.
I will face my fear. I will permit it to pass over and through me. When it has gone past I will turn the inner eye to see its path.
When the fear has gone there will be nothing. Only I will remain.0 -

I don't get that - the dog with two tails thing is when people are extremely happy - surely your husband would be sad as he's not been invited out?
We're celebrating with sausages, wine and chocolate at home.0 -
Am full of cold so luckily we've had no plans to go out. Just going to snuggle with OH, and drink some nice wine, being totally sad and catch up on some tv.
DD out for her first NYE party with friends *alone* ie without us being there boy am I apprehensive?0 -

I'll be taking in the bells at my mums with all my family but no alcohol for me as I'm breastfeeding then I'll be taxiing everyone home. It's different but I wouldn't have it any other way
Congratulations on your new baby. What does 'taking in the bells' mean? I've noticed lots of people mention this.If I have seen further, it is by standing on the shoulders of giants ~ Isaac Newton0 -
