Seriously though...just for a bit of balance...Cameron has been saying we've got an economy like Greece....so again these claims were a deliberate attempt to deceive the electorate.
All an insult to the hard working people of the country..;)

Really? The similarity is that the Government is spending far more than it's income. Something that "growth" alone will never bridge.

Like the USA. Hard nosed politicians are letting the country down as they're not spelling out the consequences if things aren't resolved.

We all know the government is spending more than its income and before the world slump we were spending around 2% of GDP more...
The point is no government is going to avoid a drop in growth of this size...the deficit would have still been near to 10% GDP regardless of the 2% overspend by Labour..
You've only got to look at the 1990's to see what I mean...and that was a very mild slowdown compared to today.

TBH they have and the outcome is Greece.

If people don't want to contribute and just want to take more and more from the pot, that is where a country ends up.

At present in the UK it is only the highest earners and the childless young that pay into the pot. Basically everyone else is a net taker. There is only so much you can extract from a minority of the population.

That's not my point. The electorate should be offered the hard choices as to the options available. Not Punch and Judy politics which gives the impression that people are "bad". We seem to have become too soft.

Can you put some numbers on that?

It's on the ONS website. I've posted it here before.

Thanks Chewie you are right with your literal translation and quite right in the point you are making from that.

I take the view that as the top rate of "income" tax is being reduced that he is applying his analogy to, IMO, £1m of income, which is really what the calculations add up to - £850 000 x 5% (reduction) or £42500 pa.

I also appreciate that there are relatively few people in that declared income bracket. Perhaps a few more who do make it but are more inventive in their accounting.

No doubt a number of them would splurge their "hard earned" readies on a couple of nice hoilidays and get hit for VAT anyway, so all is not lost.

If that's what labour meant they should have said so, rather than lying. Anyone with half a brain knows that the term millionaire refers to assets not income. Basically all politicians are liars and are hoping the electorate is stupid enough to buy the lies. It's getting pretty boring.

The Tories are of course liars too. However I think their line is that if we don't cut spending we will end up like Greece - this is not quite the same as saying we have an economy like Greece.

You seem about as peeved off with present politicians as I am, that was why I was trying to find a fairer way of deciding, with no majority in an election, who should run our country.

It would appear that we cannot trust those of any of the top parties anymore, then who is left to govern that we can trust?

What would be your suggestion to the present problems? and I am not trying to be in any way sarcastic. OK

The playing politics will continue...I'm sure of that...unless something seriously goes wrong worldwide...
I'm sure the government are thinking of a vote winning scheme just in time for the next election...infact if the budget was near balance they'd just borrow some more...
