Because 1080p capable TVs have been around for many years now whereas FreeviewHD broadcasts (and hence built-in tuners to decode) are quite recent (18 months?).

Yeah, the Freeview HD tuner in my Sony TV is completely redundant as I don't have an aerial (roof or otherwise). The TV receives all it's HD from Sky and Blu-Ray.
For £299, the TV is question isn't ever likely to include a Freeview HD tuner. I think better value can be had by spending a little more on older models of well-known brands which are often seen on offer at the likes of Richer Sounds or John Lewis.
Cheap supermarket tellies are just that;cheap.

As I bought Son one, thinking it was HD freeview, if he goes with sky, which he can get, half price via my grandson, working there, does he need a tuner, or is Sky all HD, or is it package related.?The one that was stolen had tuner inbuilt.I thought I was replacing his, like for like, but different make.

If your son uses Sky (or connects to Virgin cable), the tuner in the television will be redundant as I explained in post# 43 above.
All television broadcasts (including BBC, ITV CH4 etc) will be provided by the decoder supplied by Sky (or Virgin, BT etc).

The full HD package on Sky is subscription only.

Thanks, He,s selling up, and is having Sky in his next house, as he,s into sport, films etc, so he,s ok then.
I think I will just carry on letting OH watch TV as it is, as I probably will buy another for consevatory, and don,t want to buy 3 HD freeview boxes, if she,s happy with the status quo;Cannot run all 3 from 1 source.?:beer: Thanks for everything and everyone else for help, didn,t realise buying a tv could be so much trouble, it,s certainly confusing all this hd ready etc. got 3 perfectly good tube tv,s now, cannot give them away;and 2 more in use.

No, you really need a separate HD decoder for each TV-especially if you want to want different channels in each room.

Based on what you've said,though, you'll probably be content with the decoders built into the TVs albeit in standard definition.

Hi, That,s a bit of a body blow, and I never use PC world, have such a bad reputation.I looked at LG as well, at currys , et.al. BUT, never knew HD FREEVIEW was VITAL;;
Now that states HD freeview, how many punters, like me ,know you need HD FREEVIEW, to plug and play.and I did research on here, before I looked, not enough, obviously. There,s a 4" screen size difference, my 40" cost £245.
When I used VCR, and DVD, I could use it on all 5 tv,s just from having it set up in my lounge.with coax, still got it actually;; how come, new recorders cannot run to multi sets ?Isn,t there a HDMI splitter come booster, to receive hd signal from aerial, and send it to multi tv,s .???how many homes don,t have multi tv,s now, not many.Still toying with HD freeview box. Is it just ordinary hdmi leads I require, not ethernet ones, won,t be using pc on it ???I doubt.not botheredabout watching different chanels, as Oh is only one that watches it. It,s got to me now that I know I can achieve, what I was told I,d bought, for another £80 ish. annoyed at myself, for not knowing, class myself as pretty astute, but not on this occassion

There are many options for many set ups
the reality is that being tied to what Sky et al are showing at a set time is a fading concept
catch up and on demand is the way forward
I have freeview HD upstairs and a WD TV box(networked via homeplugs)
That WD TV allows me to access the network shared media from downstairs plus catch up facilities. There is also an Xbox 360 if I wanted to add Sky player
Thats enough for me. If I wanted Sky then I would have got multiroom when it was installed

I am keen on building an XBMC machine for upstairs though,
this would mean my play counts would update for upstairs so I know what episode I am on when watching downstairs

You can split the incoming aerial signal, just as you always could. But AFAIK HDMI has so much built-in to its standard (rights protection) that splitting it is not possible.

You can get short HDMI cables from poundshops.

Hi, No 2 son told me about £ shops ones yesterday,only want 1.5 mts I bought his 46" also, he,s in same boat now,but will go sky eventually.:beer:
