Re-HDTV

The box has it correct and it wouldn't mention an additional tuner on the box because it doesn't need one for non-HD. HD ready just means it will display HD if fed with an HD source, but if the salesman said it had an inbuilt HD tuner you were misled.
Regardless, Asda have a 28 day return policy - just take it back if it's within this period. However, the same size tv with a HD tuner is likely to be a bit more expensive.0 -
Hi flash, it only says freeview, hd ready 1080, not freeview hd, so I have been misled.
On the box it says, freeview, buy now, no hd mentioned.
How can you buy freeview,? the box and manual, all leads one to assume it,s all set up for plug and play hd tv. Is there a seperate tuner available just for HD channels? The picture is great, until my son mentioned his chanels are 101 not 1, for HD, I assumed it was HD.asdas reviews say, happy, easy set up, watching hd, great, no mention of a tuner anywhere on box or manual;;;;
The only thing that could be an issue for Asda is if they told you it would display Freeview HD out of the box.
If they said to you it will display HD that is not a mislead by Asda, its true, the screen will display an HD signal if that is what you give it.
I think the problem was where you say you 'assumed' - you assumed that technology was a simple thing, when unfortunately its anything but...0 -

Son No1 paid £1100+, against my £299, but his is a smart tv ,but, even his didn,t say in spec anything about a tuner. so I really should have known to ask more questions. The salesperson never mentioned a tuner, just plug and play, so display models must all have been running on a HD loop DVD, hence my decission to buy.
I,ve really bought a HD monitor, disguised as a HD tv, as it states on the box.Probably keep them, as I don,t watch tv, and OH is happy with it, but still feel misled, and shall state as much when I go in again.0 -

It sounds to me as if you simply misunderstood what was on offer. Even if your TV had had a Freeview HD tuner it would only have received BBC HD, BBC 1HD, ITV1 HD and CH4HD.
If you want a reasonable HD service with multiple HD channel choice IMHO, you need to subscribe to Sky or Virgin and/or get a Blu-Ray player.
I regard all HDTVs as simply monitors, unless you feed them with HD from additional sources Freeview HD simply is not adequate.0 -

If your happy with the picture then don't get too hung up on the HD, or lack of. As mentioned above, there is little HD choice on Freeview and you would only really notice the difference if you had the HD and non-HD pictures side by side or switch between them. If you've never had it you won't miss it.0 -

Remember this is a 46" set. The difference is definitely noticeable. I find that most of the off-air TV I watch is from the 4 HD channels, so I wouldn't downplay the value of HD Freeview either.
Looking at ASDA's website, it seems that they don't know the difference between Freeview and HD Freeview: none of the sets they sell is marked as "HD Freeview", even one costing nearly £2000. This isn't just ADSA: the marketing of HD TVs is full of ambiguities. The difference between 'HD Ready', 'Full HD', 'Freeview' and 'Freeview HD' is shockingly unclear for the non-technical customer. It's not an unreasonable assumption, IMHO, that a set marketed as 'Full HD' and 'Freeview' should be capable of showing HD Freeview channels in HD. To avoid the pitfalls, it seems that the consumer is expected to know more than retailers like ASDA. It is surely the retailer's responsibility to provide accurate information, not to rely on the customer to know it all.
That said, provided you are aware that there is an issue here in the first place, you should probably not expect to get all the bells and whistles if you pay a rock-bottom price in a supermarket.0 -

Yes, a £299 price tag just tells me that this will be one of the most basic models available. Of more concern to me would be the durability of the product as a whole. A Freeview HD decoder can be easily and cheaply obtained, but a long lasting quality TV set at that price point is at best unlikely.
I actually came on here before buying, to check them out, and tuners were mentioned.but I didn,t ask the right questions, obviously; The reference to HD on the box is misleading, but, you don,t look at the box in the showroom, you look at display Tv,s.
I have 5 tv,s and need boosters to get good signal, and pictures are good. Time will tell on durability, price doesn,t always determine durability, I,ve had top notch stuff break down after a couple of weeks, and am running Goodman tv,s 15 years old now, and Alba, JVC.
Where can I get just a freeview HD set top tuner , just for the 4 main chanels.???? Thanks again, Buyer beware, is true saying, still reckon for the price, Tv is good.:beer:0
