I suppose if I have 'something against' anything, it's the culture that's come about, not the school nurse! I may be in the minority, but that doesn't make me ignorant.

They shouldn't be getting stds when they are children because children should not be having sex. I am not so naive to think that it never happens, but casually offering the Pill is normalising something that should not actually be occurring. 14 year olds needing contraception should be the exception not the norm!!

I am sure most adults will agree 14 year olds having sex is not ideal - but it did/does/will always happen.

As someone who went on the pill at 15 I can assure you the pill is not 'casually offered' and as a mature 15 year old I would have been outraged had the Doc breached my confidentiality. My own daughter also went on the pill early for period issues and again it was not a casual decision and was fully discussed with health professionals. We live in Scotland which seems to be ahead of England in that you are offered smear tests every 3 years from the age you are sexually active.

As a parent you might want to know but I would argue it is not your right to do so - your child is an individual and has their own thoughts, opinions, desires and rights as well as responsibilities.

I think the schools providing services of this nature for our children are a good thing. They backup the support parents provide or in cases where there is none they give it.

  • Scares me more to think a 14yo would be in a sexual relationship without access to advice on contraception and sexual health.

Which should be the parents as it is....illegal !

You made a comment after mine on that it was nonsense. You then stated that it was the law....you never asked me for clarification what I meant, did you?

The OP was concerned and asked if it was ok that pills are just handed out and someone said, yes under Gillick...which is nonsense.

Do you still maintain that it is?

Sorry it may appear that way but I am not really trying to pick on you but it is a wrong understanding that is ripe on here

I suppose you equally did not explain what your nonsense comment related to, hardly condusive to correcting misconceptions?

the media, the mail and the like would have you believe all teenagers are having sex and orgies. That's not the reality
:rotfl: I know. But don't you think it's sending out very mixed messages. It is ILLEGAL to have sex with a girl under 16. But perfectly alright for a 14-year-old girl to clandestinely get herself the Pill, health risks and all, from someone who doesn't have her medical records, at school?

You know what school is like, - it won't be very secret!! Her school-mates will soon twig that she's going to the nurse and getting the Pill, and will cotton on to the fact that anyone can do the same if they want to. School is not an appropriate environment for family planning, I'm sorry.

If it's a health need, then the school nurse has a duty of care to provide access to meet that need.

Having sex is a health need? Not if it is illegal.....

So does it make it any less illegal if the 14 year old has discussed it wi their parents?

It did not stop you to draw the wrong one and I see, still not answering my question...strangely, no-one questioned the NSPCC link ...it clearly talks only about doctors ;)

But it's fine for her to get it from the GP or the family planning clinic and for her to tell her mates?

No, but then they know and can have a sensible conversation and maybe let the teenager see some sense.

Have you met any school nurse who knows any girl in detail?

Then by all means challenge the ruling that is being used by other healthcare professionals if you fell you have a strong case
