Aaaahhhh! Panicking today! We've found a house we really like but it would be a stretch to buy it, plus it needs loads of work. DH is totally sold, can see all the potential and is not afraid of doing the work. I, on the other hand, see a poky little cottage, smaller than our current house, and more expensive. I know he's right that the location is fab and its (almost) exactly what we said we wanted and we can save up to turn it into our dream house, but all I can think is aaaaahhhhh!! Do I trust his judgement and go with it or insist on pulling the plug? Must first stop panicking and sleep I think...

I'd definitely sleep on it, and then go back for a second look in a couple of days! You have to figure out how much work needs done, and how long it would take to be habitable. Write out a financial pros and cons list - if it's smaller and the same price as your current place, but the location is more convenient then figure out how much will it cost you to fix up vs. how much it would cost you to commute from where you are now, that sort of thing.

Lol, no offence or anything but I'm not that keen on advertising my exact address on an open forum! :rotfl:
We have now had the offer accepted and I am panicking less. As my sister said, the biggest rewards come from the biggest risks. It needs some serious TLC and mega extension to be our dream home but we will get there eventually. Next job now we are accepted is to try to get the paperwork to go through slowly enough that we have enough cash to pay for all the fees without annoying the vendor. And then, once it's signed for I have to try to reign in DH's sledgehammer-wielding ways and his spending. I love that he's enthusiastic as it means things might get done but I refuse to get into (any more) debt over this:eek:

    Wish me luck!

p.s. does a new house count as a need or a want?

Yay! I definitely say it's a need - there must have been a reason you were looking!

  • congrats Katzen! :TGood luck with the move - hope all the paperwork goes smoothly.

Me & my husband have just been given 3 months notice by our landlord as he wants to sell up, so we've just started looking for somewhere to buy. It's exciting but hella scary!! 5 viewings this week, seen 2 yesterday, one great (we're thinking of it as a back-up if we don't see anything better) and one awful. Giving ourselves 2 weeks to find somewhere and make an offer.

It's probably a crazy dream but at least we're giving it a go!!

Needs not wants, for sure! I'm paying off my debts and getting on with my life! :j

Thank you GW. Mortgage application went in today so fingers crossed please!
Have you looked in to buying the place you currently rent?

Doing really well on the Needs not Wants front ATM- funny how an impending mortgage puts a dent in your desire to spend isn't it :rotfl: I played with a little overpayments calculator thingy yesterday as I'd love to be mortgage free by 40 (11 years from now). Turns out, at current rates of interest, we'd need to overpay by £700 pm to make that happen. That would take some serious MS effort (and probably a 'no food' diet and a 'naked' approach to clothing) so that's not gonna happen but I'm already planning to see how close we can get...

Not too bad. The weather was so nasty at the weekend, I stayed in and only went out for pre-planned drinks at a leaving do. I haven't bought any treats at work either! My only splurge was on some cough and cold medicines, but I've lost my voice, so that was more of a need.

Will be visiting my parents this weekend though, which is a potential minefield. I usually catch up with friends and will meet up with the OH while I'm there (I'm seconded away for work for a while), which just means meals, cinema, drinks, day trips, and I help mum out with food etc because she isn't earning.

Glad you found your forever house! It's definitely a need :)
  • All good news, how lovely, and what a brilliant reason to focus spending. x
