Ive found that stretching myself so far with the payments stops me from wanting too much, apart from three bottles of wine a week. I am attempting to do without so many things and funding at least 300 in overpayments every month.

I can see a time though, when I will just need to give in to a want. I dont want to feel bad about it but austerity like this is reminiscent of a religious order.

I am not buying toiletries until I have used up what we have at home, and I am going to go another de clutter, with luck it will generate some ebay listings.

Why not try a little treats savings pot? Maybe every 100 you pay off you stick a few £ in your pot, or a % of eBay earnings. If its only £10 pm or so it won't make a huge difference to you DFD but will give you something to look forward to. Best of luck!

  • I didnt mean the religious order quote in anyway disparagingly. So sorry!

I mean I would rather deny myself things and pay the debts - and I feel better for that..... I just find it easier not to want things if I have no more money I could use. I can quite easily fritter money away if its there.....

Yes I see that makes sense. Its just very hard to justify in my current mindset- I was just saying its so much easier to ignore wants when you have no money left, you have to concentrate on needs to live. My husband isnt quite so dedicated and he will buy me things on occasion.... i sometimes get frustrated but then sit in the bath munching on chocolate....

I am making a real effort to get debt free in 30 months. I also need a little room in that as the car is about to die.... oh its all insane!:rotfl:

To me, this is like being on a sensible diet plan, maybe similar to the observe your weight one.

We are concentrating on making little sacrifices, to attain a goal we really want, over a a reasonable length of time.

To sustain this, we need to give ourselves little rewards (maybe for hitting milestones), or allowances to slip off the path now and then, without feeling so guilty we give up.

So easy on paper, but so much harder in practice! It is so helpful though having all the support on here.

No need to apologise at all - there are many interpretations to the written word, and often these are the start of interesting debates / mindsets.

30mth seems so near and yet at times so far doesn't it. I get a real rush each month when payments come off and I adjust the tracker sheet to see the months tick down, then start wishing the time away until the next payment.

I do think you need to allow yourself a little treat within budget to stay sane and have something to look forward to, whether it be a nice bottle of bubble bath and some 'me time' , a new book to read in the month (if it's not available at the library), or even a new top and a coffee while in town - so long as it doesn't get out of hand and become bubble bath, sponge, new towels and a dressing gown, or new top, with trousers, shoes and the matching bag followed by dinner and cocktails in town :)

Was going to go into town to Look for new work clothes, but with the promise of snow tomorrow, I might just stay home! It looks like it might be a day for PJs, hot water bottles and DVDs!

Aaaahhhh! Panicking today! We've found a house we really like but it would be a stretch to buy it, plus it needs loads of work. DH is totally sold, can see all the potential and is not afraid of doing the work. I, on the other hand, see a poky little cottage, smaller than our current house, and more expensive. I know he's right that the location is fab and its (almost) exactly what we said we wanted and we can save up to turn it into our dream house, but all I can think is aaaaahhhhh!! Do I trust his judgement and go with it or insist on pulling the plug? Must first stop panicking and sleep I think...
