Let's say for example somebody went into the petrol station who knew me and used my name and address and put down a number plate similar to mine.
I get a letter through post with wrong reg on it. Why should I pay?
In that instance, you shouldn't pay as you didn't take the fuel.

But that's not the case with you, is it?

    Thanks for the replies.

I get a letter through post with wrong reg on it. Why should I pay? The petrol station should have come outside and recorded the vehicle reg properly or checked camera to get vehicle reg.

Because you had the fuel! Why do you need to ask?

You should have given them the correct reg number instead of trying to chance your arm.

I say to anyone coming onto this forum with a "I took something and is there a technicality that saves me from paying?" question should be prepared to be panned.
  • True but they should at least have the correct information otherwise like I said somebody could have just used my name and address and the petrol station being lazy and or incompetent at recording the reg are to blame.

I have just spoken to a local policeman and he has advised me not to pay it until they send me a letter with correct vehicle reg which they should find out on their own and not from me telling them it.

What's it got to do with a "local policeman"? They're not experts in the law. You'd do better speaking to a solicitor. Or just paying what you owe.

You've a cheek calling the petrol station incompetent by the way. You forgot your card then forgot to pay within 7 days but they're incompetent?

Why would the police be interested in a civil matter?

You can follows this "policemans" advice if you wish but you won't like the outcome.
  • Thanks again for the advice guys.
I think I'll risk it and get them to send me a correct bill.
