I took that great piece of advice to start off with small steps. So, yesterday i tackled the kitchen drawers. The junk drawer is now orgaised and all loose batteries, fuses, string etc are all in resealable bags. The pile of old mobile phones, chargers and unidentified cables and all bagged up ready to recycle.

You have inspired me pinky pig! Wasn't sure where to begin today but I think my kitchen drawers are nice and unemotional and definitely need a good sort out. Will report back and let you know how I get on. Loving reading EVERYONE's progress on this thread.

Hi all, I would love to join in your decluttering challenge, I have been reading along for the last couple of days, you guys are very inspirational!

I have done a wardrobe clean out and sorted through a shelf of paper work.

Most people who visit who sat our place is not very cluttered, but so much of our storage space is given over to things belonging to our landlord PITA so we really need to keep on top of our stuff
  • Hi muddled and welcome :)

Sounds like hubby is a hoarder, especially keeping stuff like egg boxes. First of all smile :) It will get better. Have the faith that it will get better. What you need to do is a gradual overhaul.

So to give you confidence why don't you start in a room that has the least inherited or setimental stuff. So is that say the bathroom or the kitchen for instance? You need to get him on board slowly. If you go straight for the kill of saying where there are lots of his parents stuff he will be emotional or unhelpful in your path.

Now decide what room that is. Let us know if it is a fairly neutral zone and what baby steps you can take to get that one room sorted.

You can do it :j We know it should be him that can do it but let's lead by example :j

    Thanks for the welcome :)

He's away for 2 days now, so have decided to tackle the bathroom first of all, as I think that just needs empty bottles taking to the recycling bank and being given a deep clean to make it habitable again. That shouldn't take too long, and then it's onto the kitchen.

This is a bit more tricky as it's where his hoards of egg boxes like to accumulate on top of all the kitchen cupboards. But I think I can get them all down and move them into the garage (definitely his domain as long as I can get to the freezer!) Once they're gone, I think it'll just be his camping stuff and some sherry glasses of his parents left in there that don't really belong. His camping stuff I can tidy away into the trunk in the loft, and the sherry glasses might remain for another day...:o

While I'm in the loft I will put my summer clothes away as that will mean I can fit all my remaining clothes in the wardrobe and hence declutter the spare bed, chair and clothes airer they're currently on!

I think that will keep me busy for a few hours, but I'm determined to see in the New Year having made at least a start on it!

That's great muddled. :j Keep going. And when he returns don't allow stuff to clutter in these spaces that doesn't belong or isn't useful. Once he gets used to neutral zones having less clutter you can do other fairly neutral zones like the hallway, the landing. Keep chipping away :j

Hello everyone :) I can't believe how quickly this thread is moving and it's great to read your progress :)

Look forward bubble to hearing about your first meal at the dining table soon :j

  • Hello newbies, and hugs to those who need them. There has been some brilliant advice here on where to start.

    108. and 109. Ama$on sale dvd and cd - posted.

Friend coming to stay tonight, so have spare room (aka room of doom 2) to tidy up. OH and I did half an hour yesterday, so now it is just finishing off, hoovering and making bed up.

  • Well my sink is shining. My table sadly looks like a bombs hit it. Paperwork.

Plan is to list the must dos on a daily basis that way the forest doesn't get in the way of the trees. :D
  • Wow we are all doing so well :)

I just sorted under the stairs, cleared out a load of old paint tins and various other junk including old broken brushes etc. swept it all out (not easy since it's really more of a cubby hole than a cupboard) and only put back the necessary. I also put cleared out the tool box a bit - all the old batteries, pens (?) etc went in the bin. And I have a bunch of old keys to get agreement on dumping. I have no idea what they're for! One large black bin bag dumped and some old hedge trimmers left out for Tools for Solidarity.

Thanks for the tips on DH and decluttering. Hedgesparrow I have tried the 'I'm going to the charity shop' thing and sometimes it works a little :) I think I will work on this a bit more seeing as I am genuinely going there a lot at the minute. He is also excellent about giving things away if he sees an actual person in need (he gave a load of unworn clothes to a friend of a friend who was down on his luck and passes things on to family members etc). Muddledmidget you have made me feel better, your problems are worse than mine. And use the attic would be my advice, I do!

As for Ebay, I have promised myself to at least investigate it and see whether the stuff I'm thinking of would sell. Flyingmamma I am definitely not going to start buying on it as that would totally mess with the decluttering ambitions :D sorry to hear you had such bad luck though!

Break over anyway, off to do a bit more :)
